DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team defeated its rivals from across the bridge in the University of Wisconsin-Superior 6-0 on Tuesday in its first home game on the newly renovated all-turf field at Wade Stadium.

CSS got the scoring started early with two first inning runs to take a 2-0 lead. First Brian Minks scored Austin Colvard on an RBI groundout, then Trevor Bernsdorf quickly followed with an RBI double that scored Steven Neutzling for the second run of the inning.

UWS did manage to get a baserunner as far as third base in the third inning on a misplayed fly ball in the outfield, but the Saints got the next batter to ground out for the final out of the inning keeping the score at 2-0 in favor of the Saints.

Jake Kuschke would extend the Saints lead in the fourth inning with a two RBI single that drove in Bernsdorf and Sam Christofferson to double the lead at 4-0 with five innings to go.

CSS would add two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to extend its lead to 6-0. In the sixth, Al Marolt drove in Kuschke with an RBI double, then in the seventh Drew Colvard scored Neutzling with a pinch hit RBI single of his own.

The bullpen of the Saints would then slam the door in the eighth and ninth innings as Jacob Dzubay, Jake Turner, and Zack Farmer combined to hold the Yellowjackets scoreless and seal the 6-0 win to usher in a new era at the all-turf field at Wade Stadium.

Neutzling would finish the day 2-for-4 for the Saints with two runs scored, while Bernsdorf also finished with two hits while adding an RBI and a run himself.

Daniel Wood got the win on the mound for the Saints. He allowed just four hits and no walks, while striking out five batters in seven strong innings to earn his third victory of the season. He also did not allow a single hit until the fourth inning.
