Sophomore Bill Ferderer had his third strong relief outing in six days and soph Ben Carpenter and freshman Jake Smith slapped RBI singles in the top of the 11th inning as No. 8-ranked St. Thomas recorded a 7-3, 9-7 sweep of Hamline in MIAC baseball play Saturday.
The twinbill was played at the University of Minnesota's Siebert Field.
UST (13-5 overall, 5-1 MIAC) rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 7-6 in the nightcap. The Tommies were down to their last two outs trailing 7-6 when Brady Johnson's sacrifice fly tied the game in the top of the ninth. Dan Ziemann ledoff the inning with a pinch-hit single. Zach Gottfredsen singled and one out later Ben Waltz was hit by pitch to load the bases. Pinch runner A.J. Sayer scored the tying run on Johnson's fly out.
Ferderer has two saves and a victory in UST's current five-game win streak that began last Monday. In his 4 1-3 innings pitched on Saturday he struck out five and allowed one hit, one walk and no earned runs.
The Toms survived four errors and 16 runners left on base in game two. The second game lasted 3:40 on the clock and featured nine relief pitchers (seven by Hamline) as 23 left on base.
Junior Eric Veglahn (3-0) improved to 16-0 on his career with a complete-game seven-inning victory in game one. He struck out 11 and walked one.
Gottfredsen and Ryan Gerber each had four hits on the day as The Toms collected 20 hits over 18 innings.
The Tommies are alone in second place in the conference race at 5-1. Carleton scored two one-run wins over Macalester and is alone in the lead at 4-0.
St. Thomas plays Tuesday at Gustavus in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
