Union Defeats Brockport, 7-5, in Non-Conference Matchup

AMSTERDAM, NY - The Union College Dutchmen won their third straight game defeating the Brockport Golden Eagles 7-5 at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam on Thursday night. Eric Egan ran his hit streak to 17 consecutive games as the junior OF went 2-for-4 with three RBIs including a two-run home run in the 7th. Kent Curran went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI for the Dutchmen.

Union opened up the scoring in the home half of the second as CJ Worley and Chris Carbone had back-to-back RBI singles to give the Garnet and White an early 2-0 lead.

After Brockport answered with one run on a sac fly in the fourth, the Dutchmen put up three runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 5-1. Egan drove a ball deep to left over the fielder's head for a run scoring double asJamie Faber came across to score. Curran followed suit with a double into the right field corner to bring home Egan.Jake Fishman singled through the right side to score Curran which gave Union a four-run lead.

The Golden Eagles had a three spot of their own in the top of the 6th. Dutchmen starter Greg Geisel led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch before Brockport had back-to-back singles followed by a RBI double to chase Geisel from the game. Jake Vesling retired the next three hitters to get out of the second and third no outs scenario with just one inherited runner crossing home plate to cut the lead to 5-4. Geisel went 5+ innings to earn his first win of the year. The sophomore right-hander gave up four runs on six hits and three walks. He had one strikeout.

Egan provided the Dutchmen two big insurance runs in the seventh as he hit his first career home run to put Union in front 7-4. Fishman added a single later in the inning for his second of the game giving him a team leading 12th multi-hit game of the season. His two hits raised his average to .516, a mark that ranks third in all of Division III.

Luke Gilbert got one run back for the Golden Eagles in the eighth with a RBI single. The was the only blemish on Vesling in his three solid innings of relief. The freshman allowed two hits and two walks while punching out one.

Bill Christophoher gave up just a one-out single in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season. He got two batters to strike out looking in the frame.

Union will be return to Liberty League action this weekend as it hosts St. Lawrence on Saturday and Sunday.  The Dutchmen plan to honor their 2013 and 2014 Liberty League Championship teams on Sunday before the first pitch. The on-field ceremony is scheduled for 11:30am at Central Park.
