DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Earlham College baseball team picked up a pair of victories on Sunday as the Quakers finished their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series at Defiance College.
The first win of the day was the completion of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with Quakers taking the contest 7-4. Earlham won the scheduled affair 7-1.
Earlham is now 24-10 overall, which ties the 1971 team for the second most wins in a season in school history. The 1970 squad had 26 victories.
The Quakers are 13-9 in the conference and in fourth place.
Beginning the suspended game in the fifth inning, the Quakers were able to add to their 1-0 advantage in the sixth frame. A Defiance error and a RBI single by Cody Krumlauf produced a pair of runs to put the Quakers on top 3-0.
The Yellow Jackets (15-17, 10-13) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, but the Quakers answered in the seventh with three runs.
Another error by Defiance allowed the first run to score before Josh Parr and Eric Elkus had RBI doubles to make it 6-2.
Defiance scored a run in the seventh, but gave the Quakers added another unearned run in the ninth. The Yellow Jackets scored their final tally in the bottom of the ninth.
Nate Hube (3-3) worked 6 1/3 innings to get the win. He gave up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Garrett York threw the last 2 2/3 innings to earn the save. He surrendered an unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts.
Mike Messina led the Quakers with three hits, while Elkus and Brandon Smalling had two hits apiece.
Early Lead
In the next game, the Quakers got off to an early start with a pair of runs in the first inning. Brennan Laird had a run-scoring single and Parr knocked in a run on a ground out.
The score stayed at 2-0 until the fifth when Thomas Rea put the Quakers in front by three with a RBI double.
Krumlauf made it 4-0 when he produced a run in the sixth on a fielder's choice. In the seventh, Smalling had a RBI single.
After the Yellow Jackets scored in the bottom of the seventh, Ethan Bailey had a two-run single in the eighth to give the Quakers the lead by six.
Rea, Smalling and Krumlauf led the Quakers with two hits each.
Matt Brankle (4-4) went the distance on the mound for the Quakers to pick up the win. He gave up a run on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.
Laird also tied the Earlham season record with his 33rd walk of the spring. Kyle Stauffer set the mark in 2009.
The Quakers play their final road game in the regular season on Tuesday at Bluffton University. The HCAC contest gets underway at 4 p.m.
