THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team split with the Mount St. Mary Knights on Sunday afternoon as the Privateers took game one by a 9-6 score before falling to the Knights by a 5-4 score in the night cap.
Maritime was led by senior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) with three hits in six at bats, while he also walked and scored a run while driving one in as well. Freshman Chris Deddo(Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) was 2-for-6 on the day with three runs scored and also walked twice. Sophomore Brian McLaughlin(Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) led the team with three RBIs on the afternoon.
On the hill, freshmen Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) and Eric Kwiecinski (Commack, N.Y./St. Dominic)pitched well on the day as Hughes picked up his first career save as he pitched three shutout innings in the opener. Kwiecinski tossed five innings to start the second game, and allowed just two runs to keep Maritime in the game heading into the later innings of the contest.
In the opener, eight of Maritime's starting nine all collected hits on the game with Deddo and classmate Joe DiLeo (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) leading the way with two apiece. Mount St. Mary jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead as the Knights touched up senior starter Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) for the runs on three hits in the frame. Mount St. Mary added two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
Deddo got the offense going in the bottom of the third as he collected a one out double. Two batters later, McLaughlin singled Deddo home, and then came around to score as senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) collected a single into left field to pull the Privateers within three.
Both teams went down quietly in the fourth and fifth innings, but Mount St. Mary picked up another run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
Maritime got its offense firing on all cylinders in the bottom of the sixth as junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) led off with a four-pitch walk. Doerbecker then singled, followed by an RBI single from DiLeo to make the score 6-3 and chasing the Mount St. Mary starting pitcher in the process.
Following a wild pitch from the fresh arm, sophomore Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) singled up the middle to plate another run. Freshman Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) grounded into a double play, but another run came in during the twin killing to pull the Privateers back within one.
Deddo walked to get the inning going once again, followed by a McLaughlin double to chase Deddo home with the tying run. McLaughlin moved up to third on a wild pitch, followed by a Sollin walk to place runners at the corners with two down. Monahan singled up the middle to put Maritime ahead, followed by a Doerbecker walk to load the bases. DiLeo was up next and singled through the infield to score Sollin, but Monahan was thrown out as the plate as the Privateers settled for seven runs in the frame to take a 9-6 advantage.
Hughes came on in the top of the seventh and allowed a leadoff single, but retired the next three batters on weak hit balls. Hughes then walked the first man he faced in the eighth, but again got out of the frame unscathed. In the ninth inning, he allowed a single with one out but got the next batter to roll into a double play to nail down the victory.
Alsdorf earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season as he allowed five earned runs on 105 pitches. Hughes picked up the save as he scattered just two hits over his three innings of work with a pair of strikeouts.
In game two, Kwiecinski got the start and allowed a leadoff single before getting a double play and strikeout to get out of the inning. He faced four batters in the second inning to bring up the Maritime bats, looking to break the scoreless contest.
Sollin led off the inning with a double down the left field line, followed by Monahan getting a base knock to put runners at the corners. Up next was Doerbecker, who singled through the infield to put Maritime ahead by a 1-0 score. Two batters later, senior Pat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) grounded into a double play, but a run crossed the plate to put Maritime ahead by a 2-0 score.
The Privateers added a third run to the inning as Deddo doubled to the right centerfield gap to start off the inning and was moved up to third on a bunt, before McLaughlin brought him home with an RBI groundout. Maritime then added a fourth run in the following inning as Alwan collected an RBI single to bring home Doerbecker, who singled and stole second to lead off the inning.
After coasting through the third and fourth innings, Kwiecinski hit a speed bump in the fifth as he was touched up for a pair of runs.
Freshman Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) was up next for Maritime on the hill, as the rookie took the ball for the sixth and allowed a run as Mount St. Mary pulled back within one at 4-3. The Knights took the lead in the seventh inning with two more runs as D'Ancona and senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) pitched their way through the frame.
In their last chance at the plate, Maritime got a runner on first with one down as Deddo was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, junior Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) reached on an error to set up runners at the corners with two men down and Sollin coming up. However, Sollin got under a pitch and popped out to short to end the game as the Privateers settled for the split.
In the second game, Very took the loss as he tossed 2/3 of an inning and allowed the fifth and final Mount St. Mary run on three hits. Kwiecinski did not factor into the decision as he tossed five innings and allowed two runs. D'Ancona went 1 1/3 innings and yielded two runs, while striking out three.
Maritime (8-12, 3-5 Skyline) will look to get back in the win column as they will take on St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) for the final time as non-conference opponents this Thursday when they once again play a "road game" on Reinhart Field for a 7 p.m. start.
Mount St. Mary (9-9, 5-3 Skyline) will next take on Staten Island on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Morales Field on Staten Island for a 6:30 start against the Dolphins.
