Yeomen Rally Past Allegheny in NCAC Tournament

Chillicothe, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team scored seven runs over the final four innings to outlast the Allegheny College Gators, 7-6, in the opening round of the NCAC Baseball Tournament at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Sophomore southpaw Kyle Dominy was in command for 6.2 innings and his offense came to life late as he moved to 6-1 on the year. The Phoenix, Arizona, native sprinkled eight hits and walked one before departing with four runs allowed.

The Gators led 3-0 through the fifth as starter Chase Boyer kept the Yeomen hitters at bay. In the sixth is when Oberlin finally broke through with a two-out rally. Danny Baldocchi got things going with a single and Ryan Bliss followed with a double to setup senior classmate Mitch Novak. The Vermillion, Ohio, native came through as he dropped in a single to shallow right center to score a pair of runs to get the Yeomen on the board.

In the seventh Oberlin would secure the lead for good, taking advantage of four free passes issued by Gators' relief pitcher Jameson Murray as he walked three and hit one in the inning. Benjamin Whitener would tie the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly to center fly to center, but the big hit of the frame came courtesy of Bliss as he shot a hard liner down the third-base line for a two-out bases-clearing three-run triple to put the Yeomen on top 6-3.

The Gators would answer back with a single tally in the home-half of the seventh to chase Dominy from the game, but Milo Sklar came in to finish off the inning and then went on to work a clean eighth.

The Yeomen ninth started with rookie Sam Harris having the best at-bat of his young Yeomen career. The Buffalo Grove, Illinois, native fouled off multiple pitches, ultimately ripping the 12th pitch of the at-bat down the left field line for a double. He would later advance on a wild pitch and score on what proved to be the most important insurance run of the season for the Yeomen -- racing home on a sac fly to center by Andrew Hutson.

With a 7-4 lead in hand, Sklar needed just three outs to lock down his second save of the year.  With two outs and one on, the Gators threatened as Joe Killian lifted a two-RBI double to the gap in left to cut the lead down to one.  Jacob Schick would then step up to the plate and hustle his way to an infield single, leaving runners on the corners that could potentially tie and win the game. Fortunately, Sklar got Adam Bronson to ground out to Novak at second base to end the game.

The Gators took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Zach Gray's two-run home run to center and would push across a single tally in the third on Killian's two-out RBI single.

The Yeomen finished with 10 hits in the game compared to the Gators' 12. Baldocchi, Bliss and Jeff Schweighoffer each had two hits.
