Walsh Fans 14 as R-MC Blanks Southwestern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) struck out a career-high 14 in six scoreless innings as the Randolph-Macon baseball team shut out Southwestern 6-0 Saturday in the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic.

Walsh (1-0) allowed two hits and walked one for the Yellow Jackets (2-0). Freshman Patrick Solomita (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) gave up two hits with one walk and one strikeout over the final three innings to record his first collegiate save.

Senior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) led the R-MC offense with two hits and three RBI, while freshman Jeffrey Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) had two hits and two runs for the Yellow Jackets.

Following three scoreless innings, senior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) had a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a wild pitch as R-MC took a 1-0 lead. Butler had a leadoff double in the fifth and came home on a groundout by Keeler as the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 advantage.

R-MC grabbed some breathing room an inning later as Keeler's two-run double capped a four-run sixth as the Yellow Jackets built a 6-0 lead against the Pirates (0-2).

Randolph-Macon plays its final game in the Firehouse Classic at 2:30 p.m. against host Huntingdon.
