CHILLICOTHE – The No. 12 Heidelberg University baseball team fell to Case Western Reserve on Sunday at V.A. Memorial Stadium by a final score of 11-5. The Student Princes fell behind early and were unable to mount the comeback as they concluded their opening weekend of the 2016 season 1-2.
Heidelberg was held scoreless until the seventh inning, facing a ten run deficit. They were finally able to find some offense in the seventh, as with two outs the first run of the game for the Berg was plated with a bases-loaded balk by the Spartans. Derek Hug then promptly unloaded the rest of the bases with a three-run home run to left field, cutting the CWRU lead down to six.
The Student Princes scored once more in the eighth inning when TJ Harkness drew a bases loaded walk, but three runners were left on base as they continued to trail by five.
CWRU tacked on one more in the bottom of the frame and was able to keep the Berg off the board in the ninth to hand HU the defeat.
Senior Kyle Fluharty struggled early in his first start of the season, allowing two runs in the first and one in the second before settling in to throw a pair of scoreless innings. Case Western Reserve was able to chase him from the game in the fifth and continued to score off of the Berg bullpen as the Spartans scored five in the fifth and two in the sixth to take their 10-0 advantage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
CWRU's offense erupted for 14 hits just one day after HU starter Steve Huber limited them to just a pair in his complete game victory.
Hug's home run was the 19th of his career.
