Spalding wins in walk off fashion over No. 25 Heidelburg, 7-6

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team defeated Heidelberg University on a thrilling walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th, 7-6. The win sees the Golden Eagles improve to 3-2 overall, while Heidelberg falls to 1-3. Korie Vire (1-0) earned the win, while Alex Sir Louis (0-1) was tagged for the loss.

Vire continued his hot start to the season at the plate going 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Kam Bruner went 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and two RBI's, including knocking in the winning run. Blake Patterson finished with one hit and three RBI's.
Spalding started the game off quickly as Nick Chafin hit a ground ball with runners on second and third, that saw the man at third come home to score. Heidelberg threatened in the top of the second, but Kyle Olliges was able to shut the door. Spalding would get back on the board in the bottom half of the third.  A single by Vire would load the bases before Bruner would walk, bringing in a run. Patterson would scorch a three RBI double, but be thrown out trying to advance to third and Spalding would lead 5-0. Heidelberg would start the rally in the top of the seventh as a double, followed by two walks would load the bases. Parker Fronk gave the ball a ride to right-center clearing the bases as he pulled into second with a double and trailed 5-3. Heidelberg's perseverance payed off in the top of eighth, which saw them tie the game at 5-5 off of a single that scored runners from second and third. Fronk's RBI single in the top of the 10th broke the tie at 6-5 and Spalding would have their backs against the wall. In the bottom half of the inning, Bruner walked to get on base with two outs. A passed ball saw him advance to second. Another passed ball moved him to third and he stormed down the baseline to beat the throw home and tie the game back at 6-6. Vire singled in the bottom of the 12th and stole second to move the game winning run into scoring position. Bruner stepped up and crushed the ball to deep center and it dropped in over the head of the center fielder as the Golden Eagle nine claimed a dramatic victory.
Spalding will return to action Saturday, March 5th when they finish their series with Heidelberg. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm EST.
