RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball pitching staff allowed one run in 18 innings as the Quakers defeated Wilmington College 4-1 and 3-0 in a doubleheader at Sadler Stadium on Saturday.
In the game one victory, junior Howie Smith pitched eight innings allowing six hits and striking out eight batters. Freshman Walter Talcott, despite loading the bases with no outs in the ninth, earned his second save of the season by striking out three straight batters.
Earlham opened the scoring in the first when senior Brandon Smalling hit an RBI-groundout scoring junior Nate Lynch. The Quakers would add two more runs in the third on two hits and a Wilmington error.
Both teams scored one run in the sixth inning.
As a team, Earlham tallied eight hits and stole ten bases. Junior Eric Elkus was the lone Quaker to finish with two hits.
In game two, junior Bryce Rainey had his no-hit bid broken up with one out in the seventh inning on a double from Tyler Schrock. Sophomore Jonathan Hicks earned the save, pitching the final five outs.
Similar to game one, Earlham scored in the bottom of the first inning. The Quakers used one hit, one walk, and stole four bases to score the run. Earlham added a run in the sixth using back-to-back doubles from Smalling and sophomore Joe Pipher. Senior Thomas Rea hit an RBI-single to give the Quakers a 3-0 lead in the seventh.
Rea and senior Devin Spurgon each tallied two hits for the Quakers in game two. Rea and junior Brennan Laird each stole two bases.
The Quakers improve to 7-1 on the season and play the final game of the three-game stint against Wilmington tomorrow (Sunday) at Sadler Stadium. Opening pitch is scheduled for noon.
