Salem State proves too much for Bison, winning 27-6

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Nichols College baseball fell 27-6 to Salem State in non-conference action Sunday afternoon in the Snowbird Classic in Florida.

The Vikings struck for six runs in the first inning and five runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings to help secure the win in their first game in Florida so far.

Sophomore Dan Connors (Danvers, Mass.) hit for the cycle - including a two-run homerun in the sixth - and junior Teghan Malionek (Salem, Mass.) collected a game-high six RBI while falling just a homerun shy of the team's second cycle of the day. Freshman Joe White (Bellingham, Mass.) matched Connors with a game-high four hits as he drove in three and scored three in the blowout.

Senior Sean Buckland (Lynn, Mass.) earned his second victory of the year after tossing the first 4.2 innings and allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits and walking four while striking out five before the bullpen came in and allowed just one run on one hit over the final 4.1 innings.

Freshman Cam Cook (Phoenixville, Pa.) and junior Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.) paced the Bison with three hits while Cook scored two runs and Hardy scored once and also drove in a run. Sophomore Ross Caswell (Randolph, Vt.)finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Bison next play on Tuesday at noon against Lasell in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
