Redlands Tops Scarlet Raider Baseball, 8-5

REDLANDS, Calif. (March 14, 2016) - University of Redlands topped Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 8-5 Monday afternoon at The Yard in a non-conference baseball game. The contest was the fourth of nine the Scarlet Raiders will play in California as part of their Spring Break Trip.

The game was tied at five after five innings of play, but the Bulldogs scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to earn the victory. R-N drops to 4-5 on the season, while Redlands improves to 13-6.

Sophomore catcher Justin Marks and senior center fielder Ryan MacFarlane led the Scarlet Raider offense as Marks was 2-for-5 (double, triple) with two RBI and a run scored and MacFarlane was 2-for-4 with a walk, run and RBI.

The Scarlet Raiders totaled eight hits in the game and worked five walks, but stranded a total of eight on the bases in the loss. Scarlet Raider pitchers surrendered 12 hits and three walks, stranding 13 Bulldogs on the base paths.

After Redlands scored one off of senior starter Billy Taylor in the first, the Scarlet Raiders tallied a run in the second and two more in both the third and fourth innings. Marks led off the second with a triple and scored on a groundout from sophomoreRoss Halkias to account for the first Raider run. Marks brought in MacFarlane who singled and senior shortstop Gerry Patrizio with a two-run double in the third to give the Scarlet Raiders a 3-1 lead, but Redlands came back with two runs and two hits to tie the game in bottom half.

The Scarlet Raiders pulled in front their next time up, scoring twice on a hit, an error and two walks in the fourth. Sophomore third baseman Brian Boulineau came into score on an error, and MacFarlane walked with the bases loaded to push across sophomore second baseman Anthony Hernandez.

Redlands quickly erased the Scarlet Raider lead with two runs on three hits in the fourth, and the Bulldog arms kept R-N off the board the rest of the way.

The Scarlet Raiders had two runners on in the ninth thanks to a walk and MacFarlane single, and one runner in the fifth via a single from sophomore Danny Iannaccone, but they were unable to plate the needed runs.

Taylor went the first four for Rutgers, allowing five runs and eight hits. SophomoreAnthony Perconte took the loss, allowing one run in two innings of solid work, and sophomore Dan Murphy surrendered two runs in the final two frames.

Three Bulldog pitchers took the hill for the hosts, with sophomore Noah Jones earning the win and sophomore Rainier Aguilar getting the save.

Rutgers-Newark will take Tuesday and Wednesday to enjoy the California weather before returning to action at Whittier College on Thursday at 2 p.m. (PST).
