Bison hang on to defeat Skidmore, 5-3

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Nichols College baseball team defeated Skidmore 5-3 Saturday afternoon as a part of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

The game remained scoreless until the Bison sprung for three runs in the fifth followed by one in the sixth and never relenquished the lead.

 Sophomore Ross Caswell (Randolph, Vt.) had a pair of doubles in the game including an RBI-double in the sixth inning to score classmateSpencer Madden (Nashua, N.H.) in what proved to be the game-winning run.

Sophomore Cam Cook (Phoenixville, Pa.) also drove in a run while going 2-for-4 on the day with a pair of runs scored. Freshman Joe Assenza (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had a pair of extra-base hits - RBI-double in the fifth and a triple - while sophomore Greg Eng (Middletown, R.I.) drove in the first run of the game on a triple in the fifth that scored junior Tim Ford(Stafford Springs, Conn.).

Sophomore StigErik McElhinney (Dracut, Mass.) picked up his first win of the year after allowing just two runs (both earned) over 6.1 innings and walking two while striking out four. Classmate Kevin Kirley (Clinton, Mass.) earned his second save of the season tossing a scoreless last frame and striking out one.

The Bison are back in action tomorrow when they continue the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. against Heidelberg at 11:00 a.m.
