Rutgers-Newark Pounds Out 18 Hits in Win Over Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. (March 17, 2016) - The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team ripped 18 hits in a 6-3 win over Whittier College on Thursday afternoon in California, improving to 5-5 on the young season. Whittier dropped to 5-15 overall in defeat.

Freshman hurler Anthony Rosoline earned his third victory of the season, going eight innings and allowing three earned runs on eight hits, and senior Ryan MacFarlane earned the save, working around one hit in the ninth inning.

Rutgers-Newark tallied a season-high 18 hits, getting multiple knocks from six different players. The first three players in the batting order finished 8-for-16 with four runs scored and three RBI, and sophomore catcher Justin Marks was 4-for-5 with two RBI.

Marks doubled home MacFarlane in the first to start the scoring, and after the Poets scored two in the bottom half, the score remained the same until a three-spot in the fifth made it 4-2 guests. Senior Gerry Patrizio singled with two outs to get the frame started, and after Patrizio stole second, a MacFarlane single made it 2-2. MacFarlane stole second and came around to score on a Marks double, and senior Cameron Dias scored on the back of a Poet error.

A triple from senior Billy Taylor made it 5-2 Scarlet Raiders, before a single up the middle from MacFarlane in the eighth closed the Newark scoring for the day and made it 6-2 Newark heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Scarlet Raiders worked around one baserunner in the ninth to earn the win, getting back to .500 for the season with three games to play on their Spring Break trip. R-N will take a day off before battling Occidental in a three-game set starting Saturday.

Marks finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, and MacFarlane was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Taylor went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored and Patrizio was 2-for-5 (run scored), while junior Josh Cote and sophomore Brian Boulineau each had two hits (2-for-5).
