Bison sweep doubleheader over Lesley

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Nichols College baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader with Lesley University Monday evening at the New England Baseball Complex. The Bison took Game 1, 3-1, before taking Game 2, 7-4.

Game One: Nichols 3, Lesley 1 (7 innings)
Senior Joseph Nicolace (Cranston, R.I.) earned his third win of the year after tossing a complete game and only allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out a season-high eight batters. The Lynx also received a solid pitching performance with senior Koby Mitchell (Fall River, Mass.) also going the distance. Mitchell allowed three runs (none earned) on seven hits while striking out four Bison.

Freshman Joe Assenza (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was a part of all three runs for the Bison including an RBI-single to left field in the fifth inning that drove home the eventual game-winning run in sophomore Greg Eng (Middletown, R.I.). Assenza got the scoring started when he reached on a fielder's choice in the third inning, and an error by the first baseman allowed sophomore Brendan Martin (Nashua, N.H.) to score.

Martin paced the Bison with two hits – including a triple in the third which he would later score on. Junior J.P. Agiorgousis (Hanscom, Mass.) led the Lynx after finishing 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Game Two: Nichols 7, Lesley 4 (7 innings)  
Junior Matt Hardy (North Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Cam Cook (Phoenixville, Pa.) each tallied three hits and a RBI to lead the Bison to a sweep of the Lynx. Nichols also saw RBI's from sophomore Ross Caswell (Randolph, Vt.) and junior Tim Ford (Stafford Springs, Conn.).

The Bison came out the gates swinging, scoring three runs in the first inning before adding another in the second. The Lynx trailed 4-2 entering the fourth inning when Assenza scored off of a Cook double and Cook later scored off of a fielder's choice.

Junior Adam Rigney (Niantic, Conn.) earned his first win of the season after allowing just three runs (two earned) through five innings and allowing five hits and walking two while striking out nine batters. The Bison struck out 13 batters in total in the nightcap, with freshman Danny Hayden (North Kingstown, R.I.) tossing a perfect sixth inning and striking out three and sophomore Kevin Kirley (Clinton, Mass.) striking out one in the final inning.

The Lynx were led by freshmen Matthew Bavaro (Sayville, N.Y.) and Nicholas Ferragine (Randolph, N.J.) with two hits and a run apiece – Ferragine also drove in a run.

All-Time Series
This marked the first time these two teams have met with the Bison now leading the all-time series at 2-0.
