RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team scored a run in every inning as the Quakers defeated Wilmington 19-3 on Wednesday evening to give Steve Sakosits his 100th win as Earlham head coach.
Wilmington (3-19) scored three runs in the first inning, but Earlham answered with two runs in the first, four in the second, and five in the third to take an 11-3 lead after three innings.
Earlham would score a single run in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth to lead 15-3. Four runs over the final three innings rounded out the score of 19-3.
Earlham tallied 24 hits as a team, the highest hit total since joining the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) in the 2011 season. 13 different Quakers tallied hits with juniorBrennan Laird and sophomore Kendal Baker leading the way with four hits each.
Laird finished 4-4 with three RBIs, four runs scored, and two stolen bases. Baker tallied a 4-6 performance with two RBIs and four runs scored. Junior Matt Barger, senior Brandon Smalling, junior Eric Elkus, and sophomore Drew Dietz each had multi-hit contests as well.
Sophomore Matt Mathies improved to 2-0, allowing two earned runs and six hits while striking out five in five innings of work. Sophomore Dorian Holmes and junior Zach Kimura allowed just three Wilmington hits over their four innings of relief combined.
Earlham (12-4, 3-2 HCAC) will face Franklin College in a three-game series on the road this weekend. The Quakers will play the Grizzlies in a single game at 4 p.m. on Friday followed by a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon on Saturday.
