McCracken surpasses 200 career hits as No. 6 BSC completes series sweep against Rhodes, 12-4

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The No. 6 Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated Rhodes on Sunday, 12-4, completing the conference series sweep. SeniorTaylor McCracken went 5-of-5 at the plate, surpassing the 200-hit mark of his career.

The Panthers moved to 23-7 overall and 12-3 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Lynx fell to 16-16 overall and 6-9 in the SAA. BSC now stands alone atop the SAA standings with Hendrix's loss to Centre today, putting the Warriors at 11-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After BSC scored a single run in the top of the first inning, Rhodes came back to score three times in the bottom of the second for the Lynx's only lead of the game.
  • The Panthers tied things up in the top of the third, and then pulled ahead in the fourth on a sac-fly from junior David Scott.
  • BSC went up 7-3 in the sixth, with McCracken hitting his 200th career hit that inning, then pulled ahead 8-3 in the seventh, before the Lynx put up their final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to 8-4.
  • The Panthers scored their final runs of the game in the top of the ninth, putting up four more runs, including two off a McCracken RBI double.

NOTABLE

  • McCracken is the fourth player in BSC's NCAA Division III era to achieve 200 or more hits in a career at BSC, and now stands at 201.
  • McCracken went 5-of-5 at the plate today with three RBI.
  • Junior Sam Roberts was 4-of-5 with two RBI, and three other Panthers had two hits each.
  • Senior Kyle Royalty (4-0) got the win after throwing five innings and giving up seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts.
