BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Earlham College baseball team tallied at least ten hits for the 14th time this season in a 6-1 win at Bluffton University in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Tuesday.
The Quakers finished with 13 hits as a team and improved to 12-2 when reached the double-digit hit plateau.
Freshman Walter Talcott, who garnered HCAC Pitcher of the Week recognition, earned his second consecutive complete game victory over the Beavers, having shutout Bluffton a week ago. The Lafayette, Ind., native fanned six batters while allowing just five hits over nine innings of work.
Earlham took control in the second as freshman Addison Robertson singled home junior Eric Elkus. In the very next at bat, Robertson and junior Cody Krumlauf executed a double steal, putting the Quakers up 2-0.
Junior Brennan Laird, the reigning HCAC Hitter of the Week, led off the third with a solo home run. After a single from senior Ethan Bailey, fellow senior Brandon Smalling drove Bailey home with an RBI-single.
Bluffton would add its lone run on an RBI-single from Jason Colliver in the fourth.
Earlham scored the game's final two runs, one on an RBI-single from senior Thomas Rea in the sixth and the other as junior Matt Barger was hit by a pitch with bases loaded in the ninth.
Laird, Bailey, Smalling, and Krumlauf all finished with exactly two hits in the contest.
The Quakers improve to 16-5 overall and 6-3 in HCAC competition with the win. Earlham will begin a 12-game home stand with a three-game series against Manchester at Sadler Stadium this weekend.
