Earlham Baseball Drops Twinbill to Defiance

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team dropped a twinbill to Defiance College on Saturday, falling 7-2 in game one and 13-4 in game two.

In the game one loss, Defiance scored one run in the first and two unearned runs in the fourth. The Quakers cut the deficit to 3-1 when senior Ethan Bailey doubled and was driven in by junior Brennan Laird in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Brandon Smalling followed up with a single, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the threat.

Leading 3-1, the Yellow Jackets broke the game open in the eighth with four runs on four hits. The Quakers added one run in the ninth, but a double play and a foul out ended the contest.

Nick Peters earned the complete game win, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. Senior Bryce Rainey fell to 3-2 on the year, allowing 12 hits and four earned runs while striking out for in 7.1 innings.

Earlham finished with nine hits as a team with Bailey and Smalling leading the way with two hits each. Tyler Weaver led the Defiance attack going 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

In the nightcap, Defiance jumped on top with eight runs off of Earlham starter, junior John Cornett, in the third inning. The Quakers got three runs back in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits from junior Nate Lynch and senior Thomas Rea as well as a wild pitch, but could get no closer. Defiance added two runs in the fourth. Both teams scored a single run in the ninth inning.

Junior Matt Barger finished 3-4 with two runs scored. Four other Quakers recorded one hit. Defiance finished with 14 hits as a team.

Earlham stands at 20-8 on the season and 10-6 in HCAC play. The Quakers return to Sadler Stadium on Tuesday against Mount St. Joseph. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
