LOS ANGELES — Will Martel stayed perfect, Devon DeRaad hit a Grand slam and the bullpen was on its game as the Occidental baseball team beat Puget Sound 10-2 in Game 2.
Oxy has won 23 of its last 24 games, including 10 in a row. The Tigers had a 14-game winning streak earlier this season.
Martel, a first year lefty from San Anselmo, gave up one earned run in five innings, improving his rookie record to 8-0. Martel's earned run average is a team-best 1.69.
DeRaad, Oxy's All-SCIAC and All-Region selection in 2015, continues to tear the cover off the ball. The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz. cleared the bases with his 10th home run of the season in the second inning. He finished the game 3 for 3 with five RBIs, two doubles, three runs scored and a walk, to go along with his Grand slam.
DeRaad is just three home runs away from his Oxy single season record of 13 that he set last season.
Charlie Caccamo went 1 for 2 with three runs scored for Oxy.
Oxy used six different relief pitchers to keep the Loggers scoreless after Martel gave up the ball in the sixth. Will Nahmens, Josh Cohen, Trevor Lecka, Ian Li, Daniel Gowanlock and Walker Markscombined four innings pitched, with just three hits and a walk.
Next Game: The Tigers and the Loggers finish their series on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 25-5 overall and are currently in first place in the SCIAC at 18-3.
UPS falls to 15-20 overall.
Chasing History: Oxy is chasing the program's first SCIAC Championship since 1982 and looking to get back to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
