Baseball Drops Game 1, Wins Second Game of Double Header against Lehman

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Baseball team bounced back from a 4-2 game one loss against Lehman to win the second game of the double header, 8-3, on Saturday afternoon on Reinhart Field.

In the first game, four Lehman pitchers combined to only allow one hit and two runs over seven innings in the win.

Sophomore Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas)pitched six strong innings for Maritime only allowing three earned runs. Freshman Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) pitched one scoreless inning, striking out two.
Junior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) hit a homerun over the right field fence in the bottom of the seventh inning to score freshman Anthony Vieto (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset).

In the second match of the day, Maritime freshman Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) threw a complete game, seven innings, eight strikeouts, one earned run, for his second win of the season behind eight runs from the Privateers. Maritime plated at least one run in each of the first four innings.

To start the scoring, freshman Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) hit a line drive over the left field for an RBI double in the bottom of the 1st. Fellow freshman Vieto later scored on a failed pickoff attempt to make it 2-0.

In the next inning, senior Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) scored on a throwing error. Lehman answered back with two runs in the top of the third.

The Privateers then came back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Freshman Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) hit a two-out two-RBI single to give his team a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Maritime scratched together two more runs on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch. Lehman added their last run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single for the final score of 8-3.

With the split, Maritime improved to 11-5 and Lehman is now 6-12.

Maritime's next game is Wednesday, March 30, at New Jersey City at 3:30 pm.
