UWL Splits Twinbill at St. Thomas; Kohlwey Sets School Record

St. Paul, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) Wednesday afternoon at Koch Diamond. The doubleheader featured a pair of nationally-ranked teams. The Eagles, ranked ninth on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 14-6, while the Tommies, ranked 10th, took the nightcap, 8-4.

UWL is now 19-6 on the season as it saw a nine-game winning streak snapped with the loss in Wednesday's second game.  St. Thomas (Minn.) is now 20-4 on the year.

The Eagles scored six runs on eight hits in the top of the first in the opener with 12 batters coming to the plate.  The first six batters of the game reached base safely.  Joel Zyhowski doubled to start the game and went to third on Alex Cordova's single. Taylor Kohlwey followed with a single to knock in Zyhowski with the first run of the game.  Justin Anderson singled to load the bases and Alex Brown's double knocked in Cordova, Kohlwey and Anderson to give UWL a 4-0 advantage.  Nate Heili singled with Brown moving to third.  Carter Hoffman followed with a sacrifice fly to knock in Brown for a 5-0 lead.  Zyhowski later singled to score Heili to make it 6-0.

St. Thomas (Minn.) came back with three runs in the bottom of the first on two hits, including a two-run home from Brady Johnson.  After a scoreless second inning, UWL plated six runs on five in the top of the third to take a 12-3 lead.  Zyhowski started the scoring with an RBI groundout followed by an RBI single from Cordova.  It was Cordova's 200th career hit.  Brown and Hoffman added two-run singles later in the inning.

UWL added a pair of runs in the fourth on Kohlwey's two-run triple to make it 14-3.  The triple tied UWL's school record for career hits with 232 held by Jay Fanta (2009-12).

The Tommies scored twice in the fifth on RBI doubles from Jake Smith and Johnson to cut the lead to 14-5.  St. Thomas (Minn.) added a run in the seventh on Dan Zieman's RBI groundout.

James Witt (1-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.1 innings in relief.  He allowed three hits, one run and one walk while striking out three.  Caleb Boushley started for the Eagles, going 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (two earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.

UWL finished with 16 hits in the opener as all nine starters scored a run.  Eight starters recorded a hit, including six players with at least two.  Kohlwey finished 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI while Zyhowski, Cordova, Brown, Heili and Ben Morgan each had two hits.  Zyhowski, Cordova, Anderson and Brown scored twice with Brown finishing with five RBI.

Mitch Larson (2-3) took the loss for St. Thomas (Minn.), pitching 0.2 of an inning.  He allowed eight hits and six runs.  The Tommies totaled 10 hits with Johnson finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI.  Ziemann and Waylon Bemboom each had two hits and two runs while Ziemann added two RBI.

UWL scored twice in the top of the first as Zyhowski and Cordova both reached on errors.  Kohlwey's single knocked in Zyhowski for a 1-0 lead as Kohlwey set the school record for career hits (233).  Anderson followed with a run-scoring single to score Cordova as both runs were unearned.  The Eagles made it 3-0 in the third on Alex Brown's solo home run.

St. Thomas (Minn.) tallied six runs on six hits and one UWL error in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.  Ziemann's double got the Tommies on the board at 3-1 and Zach Gottfredsen single cut the lead to 3-2. Johnson's two-run double gave St. Thomas (Minn.) its first lead of the day at 4-3.  Smith later scored on a UWL error for a 5-3 lead and Ziemann finished the scoring in the inning with a bases-loaded walk.

The Tommies added to their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on Ziemann's solo home run and Gottfreds' RBI single.  The Eagles cut the lead to 8-4 in the top of the ninth as Zyhowski scored on Anderson's groundout.  UWL stranded the bases-loaded to end the game.

Troy Kenkel (4-2) took the loss for UWL, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs (four earned) and two walks while striking out three.

UWL totaled eight hits with Zyhowski finishing 2-for-5 with two runs.  Anderson finished with two RBI. Kohlwey went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader to set the career record for hits (233).  He extended his hitting streak to 28 games.  Cordova went 3-for-7 and Anderson 2-for-8 with Cordova extending his hitting streak to 17 games and Anderson extending his streak to 15.

Ryan Zimmerman (4-0) picked up the win for St. Thomas (Minn.), pitching 4.0 innings in relief.  He allowed two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  The Tommies finished with 11 hits in the nightcap with Cory Quinlan, Ziemann and Gottfredsen each totaling two.  Ziemann scored twice with three RBI.

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 23 with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Stout starting at noon.
