NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team kept The College at Brockport scoreless for five innings, but the Golden Eagles plated six runs in the final four frames to emerge with a 6-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over the Hawks on Friday afternoon at Loren Campbell Memorial Field.
Sophomore pitcher Conor Donachie (Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) threw well in the loss, allowing three runs off eight hits while striking out three in 7 1/3 innings pitched. His counterpart, junior Austin Spindler, tossed a six-hit shutout, striking out one while walking two batters.
New Paltz drops to 20-14-2 overall (8-8 SUNYAC) with the loss, while Brockport rises to 20-16 overall (10-6 SUNYAC) with the win. Both teams will complete the series tomorrow with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
After five scoreless innings, Brockport finally got on the board in the sixth, as senior third baseman/second baseman Brett Sanders scored on a wild pitch before senior second baseman Wesley Burghardt plated junior catcher Paul Ludden with a single up the middle. Ludden made it a 3-0 game in the eighth, singling through the left side to score junior right fielder Dana Cala, while Brockport added three insurance runs in the ninth.
Sophomore right fielder Nick DePietro (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) paced the Hawk attack with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate that included a triple, while Ludden batted 3-for-5 with a double to lead Brockport offensively.
