UW-La Crosse Clinches WIAC Title with Doubleheader Split

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team clinched the 2016 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) regular-season title Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader split with UW-Whitewater at Copeland Park.  The Eagles earned their 14th regular-season title in school history and first since 2012 with an 11-1 win in seven innings in Sunday's opener.  The Warhawks came back to win the nightcap, 12-2 in eight innings.

UWL, ranked fifth on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, moves to 26-7 overall and 15-1 in the WIAC.  The Eagles have won 20 of their last 22 games overall. UW-Whitewater, sixth on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, is 22-9 overall and 9-7 in the conference.  UWL is also first in this week's NCAA Division III Midwest Region rankings while UW-Whitewater is third.

The Eagles earned a doubleheader sweep of the Warhawks Saturday, winning the opener, 6-2, and the nightcap, 6-0.

UWL will host the 2016 WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's) May 13-14 at Copeland Park.  The top-seeded Eagles play Friday, May 13 at 10 a.m. versus the fourth-seed.  The championship follows a double elimination format with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championship.  Click here for more information on the 2016 WIAC Championship.

UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in Sunday's opener as Matt Wary scored on a Blake Fleischmann single.  UWL responded with three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning.  Alex Cordova walked with one out advanced to second on Taylor Kohlwey's infield single, extending his hitting streak to 35 games.  Justin Anderson followed with a single to load the bases.  Carter Hoffman's infield single knocked in Cordova to tie the game at 1-1.  After a UWL strikeout, Ben Morgan delivered a two-out two-run single up the middle to score Kohlwey and Anderson for a 3-1 lead.

The Eagles added five runs in the bottom of the second to take an 8-1 lead.  Joel Zyhowski and Cordova singled with one out and Kohlwey later walked to load the bases.  Anderson followed with a three-run double to score all three runs and give UWL a 6-1 advantage.  The three RBI tied Anderson for the single-season school record of 53 set by Chester Janke in 2002.   Morgan later added a bases-loaded walk to score Anderson and Hoffman came in on Travis Buxton-Verstegen's fielder's choice.

UWL added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.  Zyhowski stole home in the fifth while Morgan scored an unearned run in the sixth on a UW-Whitewater fielding error and Hoffman added an RBI single in the seventh scoring Kohlwey.

Jameson Lavery (6-0) earned the win in the opener for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing six hits and one run with five strikeouts.  The Eagles totaled 14 hits as eight of nine starters recorded at least one.  Kohlwey went 3-for-4 with three runs while Anderson finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.  Zyhowski and Hoffman each had two hits. Kohlwey set a school record for career doubles with 51, breaking the record of 50 held by Vinnie Rottino (1999-2002).

Lake Bacher (5-4) suffered the loss for UW-Whitewater, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing seven hits, sevne runs and two walks with three strikeouts. The Warhawks finished with six hits as Wary finished 2-for-3.

UW-Whitewater tallied seven times in the top of the second in Sunday's nightcap.  Cal Aldridge and Austin Jones each had a pair of RBI.  Justin Wegner's two-run home run in the third made it 9-0.  UWL got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on Seth Feldman's RBI single and Zyhowski's sacrifice fly.  The Warhawks scored three times in the eighth with players recording RBI hits.

Travis Stahulak (2-1) took the loss for UWL, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing two hits, three runs and two walks with one strikeout.  Mason McMahon went 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, nine runs (eight earned) and four walks while recording eight strikeouts.  The Eagles were held to six hits with Alex Brown finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored.  Kohlwey extended his hitting streak to 36 games with a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth.
 
Ankur Shah (4-1) picked up the win for UW-Whitewater, going 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out two.  The Warhawks totaled 12 hits with eight of nine starters recording at least one.  Aldridge went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Wary and Markley each had two RBI.  All nine starters scored a run for the Warhawks.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, May 4 hosting St. Olaf College (Minn.) in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. at Copeland Park.
