UW-La Crosse Earns Road Sweep at UW-Stevens Point

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stevens Point Friday night at University Field.  The Eagles, ranked fourth on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 8-4, and the nightcap, 7-6 in 10 innings.  UWL improves to 30-7 overall and 17-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the UW-Stevens Point drops to 20-18 overall and 9-9 in the conference.

With the two wins, UWL records its third 30-win season in school history.  The Eagles have won 24 of their last 27 games overall.  UWL won a school record 36 games last year and 34 in 2012.

Caleb Boushley (7-0) picked up the win in Friday's opener, going 8.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and two walks while striking out four.  He has pitched at least 6.0 innings in seven of his nine starts this season. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Alex Brown doubled to start the inning and scored on Ben Morgan's single. UW-Stevens Point scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead as Cody Hanke singled and scored on Turner Doornink's two-run home run.

The Eagles tied the game in the top of the fifth as Taylor Kohlwey hit a solo home run.  The hit extended Kohlwey's hitting streak to a WIAC record 39 games. UWL broke the 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Nate Heili had a bunt single to start the inning and advanced to second on a groundout.  After Kohlwey was intentionally walked, Justin Anderson's RBI single scored Heili to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.  Kohlwey advanced to third on the single and scored on Carter Hoffman's sacrifice fly.

The Pointers cut the margin to 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh on Ben Diedrick's solo home run.  Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning as Travis Buxton-Verstegen scored on Heili's sacrifice fly for UWL while Hanke hit a solo home run for UW-Stevens Point.

UWL added three runs in the ninth.  Anderson hit a lead-off home run to make it 6-4 followed by back-to-back doubles from Hoffman and Brown.  Joel Zyhowski's two-out double scored Brown.

UWL finished with 14 hits as seven of nine starters recorded at least one.  Andeson and Zyhowski each had three hits for the Eagles while Heili, Hoffman and Brown each had two.  Six players scored a run for UWL with Kohlwey and Brown each finishing with two.

Chris Hetzel (0-2) took the loss for UW-Stevens Point, pitching 1.2 innings in relief.  He allowed two hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks.  Mark Kowalke started for the Pointers, going 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs and one walk with three strikeouts.  UW-Stevens Point totaled eight hits with Hanke and Diedrick each recording two.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth in the nightcap as Kohlwey extended his hitting streak to 40 games with a double to center field.  The 40-game hitting streak is tied for seventh-longest in NCAA Division III history.  Hoffman singled with two outs to score Kohlwey for the first run of the game.  The Pointers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with Parker Sadowski scoring on Luke Thomka's fielder's choice.

UWL tallied four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead, but UW-Stevens Point responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 advantage.  UWL scored its four runs on five hits and one UW-Stevens Point error.  Cordova and Kohlwey singled to start the rally and both scored on Anderson's double to left field.  Hoffman followed with a triple to score Anderson and came in on the play on a Pointers' error.  UW-Stevens Point used four hits and one error to score five times in the bottom of the sixth.  Doornink's two-run single cut the lead to 5-3 and Peter Strommen's infield single made it 5-4.  Doornink scored on Sadowski's RBI double to tie the game and Strommen later scored the go-ahead run on William Iloncaie's sacrifice fly.

The Eagles tied the game in the top of the seventh with Heili scoring on Anderson's sacrifice fly.  The game remained tied until the top of the 10th.  Anderson doubled to start the inning for UWL and advanced to third on an error.  Hoffman walked and was forced at second for the first out of the inning with Anderson remaining at third. Buxton-Verstegen delivered a single to right field to knock in Anderson for the eventual game-winning run.

Logan Mallek (3-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven.  Troy Kenkel started for UWL, going 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, six runs (five earned) and one walk with six strikeouts.

The Eagles finished with 12 hits as Buxton-Verstegen went 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Kohlwey, Anderson and Hoffman each had two hits with Anderson recording three RBI.  Kohlwey and Anderson each scored twice while Hoffman had two RBI.

Cordova and Kohlwey tied the single-season school record with 57 runs. Kohlwey (2014) and Vinnie Rottino (2002) also finished with 57 runs in a season.

Drew Spaeth (3-3) took the loss for UW-Stevens Point, pitching 3.0 innings in relief.  He allowed three hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks with three strikeouts.  Alex Thompson started for the Pointers, going 5.1 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs and one walk while recording two strikeouts.  UW-Stevens Point had eight hits in the nightcap as Sadowski went 3-for-5.  Doornink and Strommen each had two hits.

The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday, May 7 starting at noon.
