Giants Reach 30-Win Plateau With Win Over Knights in Regular Season Finale

More news about: Keystone

Aston, Pa. – Keystone College reached the 30-win plateau on Sunday with a 13-9 victory over Colonial States Athletic Conference foe Neumann University in the regular season finale for both teams.  The Giants finish the regular season with a 30-9 overall record including a 15-3 mark in conference play and will hold home field advantage in next week's CSAC playoffs as the tournament's top seed.

Immaculata University will be the #2 seed in the conference tournament and will host #3 Neumann (19-17, 11-7 CSAC) in a first round game on Thursday while the Giants will host the winner of Monday's game between Gwynedd Mercy University and Centenary College on Thursday starting at 3:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field.

The conference postseason is a double-elimination tournament that will continue with Friday morning with a game between Thursday's winners at Keystone and an elimination game at Marywood University.  The remaining 1-1 teams following Friday morning's game will play another elimination game at Keystone on Friday afternoon while the championship game, and an if necessary second title game, will be played at Keystone on Saturday afternoon.

Keystone took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Sunday as Robbie Nardelli (Eynon, PA/Valley View) hit and RBI triple before scoring on a wild pitch.  The Giants extended their lead to five runs the following inning when Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) scored when Brandon Eady (Bowie, MD/DeMatha Catholic) reached on a Neumann error, Nardelli connected on an RBI base hit, and Austin Chaszar (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Regional) came home on another wild pitch.

Neumann cut their deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two-run home run, but Keystone got those two runs back in their next at-bats as Chris Triano (Greenwich, CT/Rye) hit an RBI double down the left field line before coming home on a Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) single to center.

After the Knights narrowed the visitor's lead to 7-4 in the home fifth, Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) drove in Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) with a single to make it a four-run ballgame in the top of the sixth inning, but the hosts drew to within three in the home half of the frame on a solo home run.  Chaszar brought home Ross with a single the following inning, but a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh cut Keystone's advantage to 9-7.

Lanfranco stole third and scored on a Neumann error before Eady drove in Reyes with a single in the top of the eighth to give the Giants an 11-7 cushion before a two-run homer brought the Knights to within a pair of runs heading into the ninth inning where Keystone closed out the scoring with a two-run single off the bat of Reyes.

Keystone starter James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three batters in 4.1 innings before handing the ball off to Danny O'Neill (Lake Hiawatha, NJ/St. Mary's Rutherford), who was charged with three runs on three hits in two innings of work.  Nick Spinella (Bethel, CT/Bethel) yielded two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings on the hill with a pair of strikeouts while JP Ramirez (Bronx, NY/Xavier) walked the only batter he faced.  Billy Nelson (Moscow, PA/North Pocono) was credited with the save with 1.1 shutouts innings with one K and one hit against.

Reyes went 3-5 with three RBIs while Chaszar and Nardelli collected three hits apiece to power the Giants, who held a slim, 16-15 edge in hits for the game.

Neumann's Patrick Graham was charged with the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in three innings while the Knights were forced to use six relievers over the final six innings.

Curt Yenchik led the hosts with four RBIs while Kyle Weller led Neumann with three hits in the loss.

Keystone will host the winner Monday's game between Gwynedd Mercy and Centenary in the first round of the double-elimination conference tournament on Thursday afternoon.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field.
