Cary, N.C.- Austin Wilson's run-scoring double, followed by Ryan Hill's two-RBI single lifted Guilford College past William Peace University in extra innings Sunday. Trevor Denton threw the final two innings for his first Guilford victory, and helped the Quakers win the three-game weekend set.
William Peace (3-3) had the upper hand on the Quakers (3-2) through the first four innings on Sunday. Nathan Holt's RBI single in the bottom of the second opened the scoring. The Pacers followed with another run in the third on a two-out, RBI triple from Allec Allred. Kyle Cranmer's sacrifice fly, and Mickey Anerton's two-run single pushed the Pacer's lead to 5-0 after four.
Ben Brann held Guilford to one hit through four before the Quakers responded with a loud fifth inning. With two runners on, Rocco Wilcox scorched an RBI double, one of his career high four hits to score Guilford's first run. Trevor Denton, Joe Metts, Andrew Munster, and Logan Washle followed with consecutive RBI singles to even the game at five apiece.
William Peace countered with another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Easton Payton.The Quakers took their first lead of the game, on a wild two-out play in the seventh inning that scored Logan Washle, Logan Shortt, and Micheal Pinkston. Charles Finney hit a swinging bunt fielded by the third baseman, whose errant throw allowed all three runs to score. A Wilcox single scored Finney, pushing the Quakers lead to 9-6.
This lead wouldn't last long, however. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Cranmer launched a three-run inside the park homer that evened the score.
After a stagnant eighth inning, Wilcox collected his fourth hit, which scored Austin Wilson and gave the Quakers a 10-9 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Anerton lifted a single to right field, scoring Easton Payton from first, sending the game into extra innings.
The Quakers wasted no time in the top of the 10th. Wilson's double scored the go-ahead run, and Hill's single added two more runs to the Quakers lead. Denton (1-0) loaded the bases with two outs before freezing Parker Fernstrum to end the game.
Wilcox paced the Quaker's 16-hit attack with four hits and three RBIs. Washle had three hits, an RBI, and scored twice. Denton and Metts both added two hits and an RBI.
Peace's Anerton shared game-high honors with four hits and three RBIs. Cranmer, who entered the game in the fourth finished with four RBIs. John Ramirez (0-1) pitched the 10th and took the loss.
The Quakers are back in action Wednesday, when they will face off with non-conference opponent Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. at 3:00 p.m.
