The Baruch College Bearcats won their season and home opener at MCU Park Brooklyn Cyclones, 2-1, in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader on a foggy Saturday afternoon on Coney Island.
The Bearcats scored first in the second inning on a throwing error that brought home Edwin St. Hilaire.
Old Westbury tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Dean Sheridan to plate Tommy Ziegen.
The Bearcats scored the go ahead, and what stood as the winning run in the fifth inning, as Raymond Maurer belted an RBI single to plate Ramon Moreta for the 2-1 lead and eventual final score.
Rookie Paul Sirakowski entered the game in the third inning and earned the solid win in his intercollegiate debut with a line of five inning, six hits, one run (earned), and four strikeouts.
The second game was called off in the fifth inning, due to heavy fog. The teams and umpires waited 25 minutes, but the fog did not dissipate, forcing the game to be halted with Old Westbury leading, 2-0. The game is ruled incomplete and will not count.
The Bearcats will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, February 26, with a 12:00 p.m. non-conference single road contest against Mount Saint Mary College. The game will be played at Dutchess Stadium in upstate Fishkill, New York.
