The Baruch College Bearcats suffered an 8-4 loss to the Bison of Gallaudet University in a single game contest played on Sunday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings, but the Bison from Washington, DC broke it open with three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to lead 6-0.
The Bearcats managed to finally get on the scoreboard in their top half of the eighth inning. Ramon Moreta started the rally with a single, stole second base, and went to third on a passed ball. Gilberto Mendoza, Jr. smacked an RBI single to plate Moreta. Mendoza, Jr. would later came around to score on an RBI double by Jasdeep Buttar.
The Bison added two more runs in their next at-bat to lead 8-2, but the Bearcats went on another rally in the top of the ninth. Dan Daley scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Mendoza, Jr. John Paul Cattaro hit an RBI double to plate Mendoza, Jr.
Unfortunately, the rally and contest ended with the score of 8-4.
Blake Phillips pitched a solid game for the Bison by allowing no runs, five hits and striking out six to earn the win in 7.0 innings pitched. Kyle Gum led their team at the plate batting 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Bison who compete in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC).
Moreta (two runs) and Mendoza, Jr. each had two hits for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats will play the final game of the annual Fort Myers, Florida trip Monday morning at 9:00 am against Carrol University.
