LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team ended its recent losing streak in a big way on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of No. 1-ranked Emory. The Scots took game one 12-10 before handing the Eagles their fourth loss of the year with an 8-2 win in the finale.

Covenant (8-13) takes the series win as well and the Scots have now beaten a top-five ranked Emory team in the last two years. Emory, which was ranked No. 1 by D3baseball.com, falls to 17-4 on the year.

GAME ONE: Covenant 12, Emory 10

The Scots hit three home runs and pounded out 12 runs on 12 hits before holding on for a 12-10 victory in Saturday's first game.

Covenant scored three runs in the first, all coming on Joel Johnson's three-run homer to left field, to go ahead 3-0. The homer was Johnson's second of the year. The Scots then scored four runs in the third as Forrest Hunter and Tyler Moore had RBI hits before Lewis Saunders and Devin Cerrato drew bases loaded walks to take a 7-0 lead. 

In the fourth, Julien Amorelli doubled to deep left-center field to score both Alex Kerr and Hunter to give the Scots a 9-0 lead. After Emory scored three runs in the fifth, Trenton Nobles launched his first homer of the season, a solo shot to right field, making it 10-3.

Emory sliced the Covenant lead to 10-7 with four runs in the sixth, but Covenant played long ball again in its half of the inning. Kerr joined the homer party as he hit a two-run shot over the left field fence to bring the lead to 12-7. 

The visiting Eagles chipped away as they scored a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth, but the Covenant bullpen stood tall as Grant Kierpa threw a scoreless ninth to preserve the win.

Johnson, Hunter, Kerr and Amorelli each had two hits for the Scots. Johnson had three RBIs, while Kerr and Amorelli had two apiece. Zach Kyzer (2-3) got the win on the mound as he started and went five innings allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts.

Emory starter Luke Emmett (3-1) allowed seven runs on five hits in 2.1 innings to get the loss. Jeff Ronpirin finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs and Brian Hernandez was 2-for-5 with three RBIs for Emory.

GAME TWO: Covenant 8, Emory 2

In the second game, Covenant came back from a 2-0 deficit to score the final eight runs and claim an 8-2 win and a doubleheader sweep of Emory.

The first 10 Covenant batters were retired by Emory starter Philip Maldari before breaking through in the fourth. Caleb Bloye and Johnson put together consecutive RBI doubles to tie the score at 2-2. 

In the fifth, Kerr led off with his second homer of the day to give the Scots a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Luke Harvey singled home Nobles and Johnson followed with a two-run single to make it 6-2. The Scots then tacked on two more runs in the sixth as Jaret Barr doubled home Amorelli before scoring on a Cerrato triple.

Richie Hennessey made his first career start for Covenant and went 1.2 innings. Ross Skipper (1-0) picked up his first career win as he threw 3.2 innings out of the bullpen and allowed one unearned run. Drew Bradley got the save as he got Covenant out of a jam in the sixth before tossing a scoreless seventh.

Harvey and Johnson each had two hits for Covenant, with Johnson driving in three more runs. Covenant out-hit Emory 9-6.

Maldari (0-1) got the loss for Emory as he went four innings and allowed three runs. Chris Young had two hits for the Eagles.
