Hope Baseball Hammers Out 23 Hits In Sweep Of Roger Williams

The Hope College baseball team is off to a 5-0 start for the first time in six years after sweeping Roger Williams 16-3 and 13-8 in a doubleheader Saturday at Pat Thomas Stadium in Leesburg, Florida.

The Flying Dutchmen hammered out 23 hits between the two games.

In the first game, third baseman Danny Carrasco of Grandville, Michigan (Calvin Christian) went 4-for-4 with six RBI.

Winning pitcher Ty Van Wieren of Grand Haven, Michigan (Grandville) benefited from a seven-run rally in the top of the first in his first start of the season.

Van Wieren scattered three hits and two runs over 4 ⅓ innings. He struck out six and walked five.

In the second game, shortstop Jordon Fairchild of Muskegon, Michigan (Oakridge) went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Hope broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run second and a four-run third.

Reliever Matt VanDyken of Zeeland, Michigan (East) worked out of a fourth-inning jam to pick up the win.

Hope returns to action on Monday, March 20 with a 9:30 a.m. doubleheader against Loras, Iowa.
