GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball team split their home doubleheader Sunday against Keystone College. The Griffins took game one, 4-2, but fell in the nightcap 3-2 in extra innings.

In game one, Jason Mulvey was 2-for-3 and reached the 100 hit mark with his single in his first at bat.

The Giants led 2-0 in the opener heading into the home half of the fifth inning. A Derek Whitfield solo homerun cut the deficit in half 2-1. It was his first on the season

The Griffins would strike for three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Dave Tatoian led off the inning with a walk followed but a Josh Lopez double to put runners in scoring position. After a Keystone pitching change, Ryan Keen would load the bases reaching on a hit by pitch. Shaughn Wright would tie the game 2-2 with an RBI single to plate Tatoian.

Gwynedd then called upon pinch hitter Nick Mulvey who singled home to eventual game-winning run in Lopez to keep the rally alive.  Iziah Trimble would add an insurance run to score pinch runner Gabe Leff for the 4-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh.

In the seventh, the Griffins called upon Sachael Sciarretta for the final three outs. Starting pitcher Nick DeRitis worked six innings with five strikeouts.

Sciarretta got the first batter to fly-out. After a one-out single Sciarretta was able to induce a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Game two saw a pitcher's duel between Mike Di Ianni and Keystone starter Yeison Andujar. Both starters worked into the eighth inning and each allowed one hit heading into the fifth.

Keystone would get on the board first in the fifth with a ground out to score a run. The Griffins would respond in the home frame. A one out Trimble single would get the offense going. After a bunt and Bobby Heck walk the table would be set for Tatoian as he connected on a triple of the outfield fence to plate both runners for the 2-1 lead.

The Giants would load the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth. They would tie the game 2-2 on a fielder's choice. After an infield fly Keystone would load the bases with a two-out single but Di Ianni was able to end the inning with a fly-out to limit the damage. The Griffins would put the go-ahead run on in the home half of the inning but were unable to bring him around to score.

Both teams would be retired in order in the seventh by both Andujar and Di Ianni respectively.

In extras, the Giants would put a pair of runners on with one out. Keystone would take the lead 3-2 on a single but reliever Liam Sullivan ended any potential trouble getting the final out on a strikeout.

In their final at-bats, the Griffins wouldn't go down without a battle. After two quick outs to start the inning Nick Mulvey would reach on an infield single. Wright would keep the inning alive reaching on a fielding error to move Mulvey into scoring position. Tommy Nardini would then walk to have the winning run in scoring position. Andujar was then able to get a 3-2 count strikeout to end the game.
