Picht stays hot for Piper Baseball team

More news about: Hamline

Not even chilly weather could cool down Jacob Picht when he is on a batting tear.

Such was the case Tuesday at CHS Field as the senior first baseman whacked out six hits in eight at bats and raised his batting average in MIAC games to a nifty .484. Unfortunately, St. John's brought their hitting shoes as well and dealt the Pipers 4-3 and 8-6 losses in a MIAC twinbill

After being retired in the first inning, the Oakdale, Minn. native had a pair of singles in his next two at bats in the opener. On his first trip to the plate in the second game, he hit a liner that bounced off the SJU pitcher's leg straight to the first baseman for an out. The next four times, however, Picht hit 'em where the Johnnies couldn't find them, knocking in three runs with three singles and a home run.

It was one of those days where the Pipers were close but couldn't quite corral St. John's.

In the first game, Ben Resnick started impressively on the mound, retiring the first nine batters he faced. In the bottom of the third, Collin Olstad gave HU a lead with a booming three-run homer to left field. SJU, however, evened things with three tallies in the fourth and it stayed that way until the seventh when the visitors pushed across the winning run against reliever Sam Petrick.

The Pipers fell into an early 5-0 hole in the second game but pecked away and eventually tied the score at 6 after six innings. Picht's two-RBI single in the fourth made it 6-3. Back-to-back doubles by Joe Setrum and Nick Kukurich, a fly out and grounder made it 6-5 to set the stage for Picht's solo sixth inning shot -- his team-leading fifth of the year -- that tied the game.

SJU went back ahead with a couple of unearned runs in the eighth inning. In the ninth Picht singled with one out but Olstad's sharply hit grounder went directly to the SJU pitcher, who turned it into a double play to end the day. The Pipers received excellent relief efforts from Zach Smith and Alex Bauermeister, who gave up just one earned run in the final eight innings of play.

Hamline is now 10-16 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play. They are off until Wednesday, April 19 when they play a doubleheader at Bethel. The first game begins at 2:30 p.m.
