#6 Merchant Marine - 2, #3 Farmingdale State - 0

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Merchant Marine sophomore pitcher Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) threw a complete game, two-hit shutout, leading #6 Merchant Marine to a 2-0 victory over #3 Farmingdale State in the Skyline First Round this afternoon. The FSC baseball team was eliminated from the playoffs, while the Mariners advance to the double-elimination tournament hosted by top-seed St. Joseph's-LI.

After both teams combined for just one hit through the first four innings, Mariners junior first baseman Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) hit a lead off triple over the right fielders head in the fifth and was driven in on a sacrifice fly to center by senior third baseman Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.) to give Merchant Marine the 1-0 advantage.

Merchant Marine tallied their second run of the game in the sixth inning as junior left fielder Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) led off with a double to left field, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a drag bunt single by junior designated hitter Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.).

In the bottom of the ninth inning, FSC freshman left fielder Vincent Rice (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) earned a four-pitch leadoff walk. Spinnenweber struck out the next two batters, before sophomore designated hitter Joseph Roche (Westbury, N.Y.) hit a two-strike pitch just foul off the right field wall. Roche eventually reached base on a walk but a pinch-hit fly out to center ended the game and sealed the 2-0 victory for the Mariners.

Spinnenweber improved to 3-4 on the year after striking out five in the complete game shutout.

Merchant Marine will now face #2 Maritime on Friday, May 5th at 2:00 p.m.
