THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team picked up another non-conference win on Tuesday evening as the Privateers knocked off the Lehman Lightning by the score of 13-9 on the Reinhart Baseball Field.

Maritime was led by junior Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), who led the team with five RBIs, while senior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had four hits on the game with two RBIs. Junior Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) also had three hits and drove in two on the night. During the bottom of the eighth frame, Deddo, Semler, and McLaughlin launched three consecutive home runs to put the game out of reach.

Sophomore Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored two runs and was 2-for-4, while freshman Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) added three more hits and drove in two runs and scored a pair of runs. Junior Zach Parilla (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) walked twice and also scored a pair of runs for the Privateers.

On the hill freshman Luciano Besh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Franklin Regional) got the start and did not allow a run over the first three innings of the game. Sophomores Sean McQuail (Middle Village, N.Y./Cathedral Prep) and Nick Fortunato (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) were up next before freshman Skylar Graff (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset), who threw 1 2/3 innings. Sophomore Matthew Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) closed out the game with five strikeouts over two innings as he earned his first save of the season.

Maritime opened out of the gates hot and scored nine runs in the first three innings to take a 9-0 lead. Lehman closed the gap down to two with seven runs in the middle innings, before pulling within one in the top of the eighth. Maritime scored four runs on the back-to-back-to-back home runs to pull away late before Lehman cashed in once more to cap off the scoring at 13-9.

Besh set down the side in the top of the first after allowing a one out single. Costleigh got the bottom of the first started with a single then stole second. Deddo walked and Semler doubled to left field to chase home Costleigh. McLaughlin then singled to add the second Maritime run of the frame.

Parilla walked to lead off the second before Diaz singled to put two runners on. Senior Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) bunted the pair into scoring position before Costleigh picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly. After Diaz moved up to third on a wild pitch, Deddo reached on an infield single to put the Privateers ahead by a 4-0 margin.

In the bottom of the third McLaughlin singled followed by a walk from freshman Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), sophomore Joe Scerra (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Parilla drew a walk to force home the fifth Privateer run. Diaz knocked a double to leftfield to chase home two more runs. Three batters later Deddo singled down the left field line to bring two more runs around to cap off the five-run inning and give Maritime a 9-0 lead.

McQuail took over for Besh in the fourth and retired the side in order, including two strikeouts. Lehman scored five in the fifth off of McQuail, who was lifted for Fortunato heading into the sixth. In the sixth, Fortunato got the leadoff batter to pop up on the first pitch, but the next three reached to force the left-hander from the game.

Graff came on and got a groundout that allowed one run to score before an error allowed a second Lightning run to cross the plate as Lehman pulled back within two at 9-7. The Lightning scored again in the top of the eighth as the first four batters reached against Graff, who was relieved by Buckshaw with the bases loaded and no outs. The righty struck out the first two batters before getting a comebacker to strand the bases full.

In the bottom of the eighth, Costleigh got the next Privateer rally started with a two-out single. Deddo hit a two run home run to right centerfield, followed by a second home run by Semler on a 2-2 pitch. McLaughlin made it a trifecta of home runs as he sent a 2-0 pitch over the right centerfield fence to give Maritime a five-run lead at 13-8.

Buckshaw allowed a leadoff home run to start off the top of the ninth, but struck out three of the next four batters to close out the game and seal the victory for the Privateers.
