Privateers Match Season-High 21 Runs to Advance to Skyline Conference Championship

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team picked up their 25th win of the season in convincing fashion with the team's second-straight 21-run outburst on a Sunday afternoon as the Privateers knocked off top-seeded St. Joseph's (LI) by the score of 21-8 on Gregg Alfano Field on Long Island.

Offense was once again the name of the game for the Privateers as the team scored 21 runs on 22 hits including four hits apiece from juniors Stephen Semler (Kirkland, Wash./Lake Washington) and Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) as well as sophomore Matt Costleigh (West Islip, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and freshman Phil Russo (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea). Juniors Connor Alwan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) and Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) each had two hits apiece, while freshman Antonio Diaz (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) and senior Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) also collected one hit each.

The top eight hitters in the Privateer lineup also had at least one RBI apiece, led by Deddo and Semler with four RBIs apiece. Russo and Diaz each drove in three runs apiece, while Schiavoni drove in two runs. Costleigh led the Privateers with four runs scored, while Deddo, Semler, McLaughlin and Diaz each scored three runs. Russo and Alwan scored two runs on the afternoon as well.

The Privateers sent freshman righty Travis Bruinsma (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) to the hill in search of his eighth win of the season to extend the single-season record, and the rookie tossed six innings and allowed two earned runs as he struck out four Golden Eagles to earn the victory. Fellow freshman Matthew Paghidas (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) was unable to record an out in the seventh inning, but sophomore Alex Poliwoda (Southold, N.Y./Southold) came on and tossed three strong innings to earn his first save of the season and third of his career.

Maritime stormed out of the gates in the top of the first inning with eight runs on 10 hits. Costleigh and Deddo singled to open up the frame, Semler doubled on a ground ball down the left field line to plate Costleigh and give Maritime a 1-0 lead. McLaughlin and Russo picked up RBI singles to push Maritime ahead 3-0 before Alwan singled to re-load the bases.
 
Schiavoni kept the inning going with a single to right to bring McLaughlin home and chase the Golden Eagle pitcher from the game. Diaz doubled on a deep fly ball to right centerfield to score two more Privateers as the first eight Maritime batters reached via base hit. Costleigh picked up an RBI on a bunt single, before Deddo and Semler reached to load the bases once again. St. Joseph's (LI) got out of the frame after yielding eight runs and 10 hits.
 
Bruinsma took to the hill in the bottom of the inning and did what was needed as he set down the Golden Eagles in order. He did allow a one out single in the bottom of the second but got out of the inning with a pair of fly ball outs.
 
In the top of the third Costleigh reached base again with a one out walk, and Deddo followed with a long home run over the left centerfield fence to give the Privateers a 10-0 advantage.
 
In the bottom of the third, the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with one out, but Bruinsma got the comebacker to start the 1-2-3 double play with Schiavoni and McLaughlin to escape the inning unscathed.
 
In the top of the fifth Costleigh singled on a ground ball to the third baseman, Deddo was hit by a pitch to put the first two runners on base again for Maritime. Semler followed with a seeing-eye single through the left side as Costleigh raced around third to make the score 11-0. Two batters later Russo singled to load the bases.
 
Alwan singled through the left side to plate the 12th Maritime run as Semler trotted home. Schiavoni walked with the bases loaded to pick up an RBI, before Diaz reached on a fielder's choice to plate one. The return throw on Diaz' ground ball was thrown away allowing the 15th Maritime run to cross the plate.
 
St. Joseph's (LI) got three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Bruinsma got through the sixth inning got after allowing a leadoff single. The Golden Eagles added three runs off of Paghidas in the seventh, but Poliwoda came on and got the next batter to ground into a double play before getting a fly out to centerfield to stem the rally.
 
Diaz got another Privateer rally going as he reached on an error in the top of the eighth. Three batters later Deddo walked, followed by Semler doubling to deep right centerfield to plate a pair. McLaughlin was hit by a pitch to put two runners on and bring up Russo. The left-handed hitting Russo sent a curling line drive to left field to plate McLaughlin and Semler and increase the Maritime lead to 19-6.
 
In the bottom of the eighth St. Joseph's (LI) got two runs back on a wind-aided two-run home run off of Poliwoda. The next two batters were retired on fly balls.
 
Schiavoni led off the top of the ninth with a single to right field but was erased as Diaz reached on a fielder's choice. Costleigh doubled to left to put a pair in scoring position and Deddo followed with a single to centerfield and drove in a pair to give Maritime a 21-8 lead.

Poliwoda closed out the bottom of the ninth with a pop up, and then after walking the next batter got the Golden Eagles to ground into the 6-4-3 double play to seal the Privateer victory and send Maritime to the championship round on Monday.

Maritime (25-11, 15-3 Skyline) take on the fifth-seeded Mount St. Mary, after the Knights defeated the Golden Eagles by an 8-5 score in this afternoon's elimination game. Tomorrow's game will begin at 12:00 p.m. from Gregg Alfano Field in eastern Suffolk County.
