Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team fell behind in the first inning and could not dig its way out of that early hole as the Cru fell to Texas Lutheran 16-4 Tuesday night in Seguin. UMHB is now 0-1 to start the season. The Bulldogs improve to 6-0 on the year with the victory.

TLU took advantage of four walks and an error to grab a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Braden Letney scored on Dakota Best's single as the Cru cut it to 2-1 in the top of the second, but the Bulldogs put five runs on the board in the bottom of that frame for a 7-1 lead. Landon Dieterich's RBI single cut it to 7-2 in the top of the third, but Texas Lutheran tacked on four runs in the bottom of that frame for an 11-2 advantage. Letney scored on a TLU error in the top of the fourth to make it an 11-3 game. The Bulldogs added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and scored three more in the eighth inning to take it to 16-3. Sam Wheatley doubled home Dawson Shibley for UMHB in the top of the ninth to cut it to the final margin.

Dieterich had two of the Cru's eight hits in the loss. Letney scored two of UMHB's four runs in his first collegiate baseball game. Mason Schuh took the loss to drop to 0-1 after giving up three runs in an inning of work. Two players had three hits apiece for TLU as the Bulldogs rapped out 15 hits as a team. Jacob Terpstra was credited with the victory for Texas Lutheran.

The Cru will now return home to host Schreiner University for a three-game, non-conference series. The schedule for that series has changed to try to avoid the rain forecast for Central Texas this weekend. The two teams will play a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Thursday before closing out the series with a 1:00 PM single game on Friday at Red Murff Field.
