UNION, N.J. -- Five pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout as Gwynedd Mercy opened their 2018 slate with an 8-0 win at Kean Sunday afternoon.
Mike Di Ianni, Gino Tripodi, Liam Sullivan, Matt Carter, and Dave Tatoian combined for seven strikeouts and yielded one hit in just the second and third innings.
Offensively, Ryan Keen went 4-for-5 and was a home run shy of the cycle while Tatoian delivered a bases-loaded clearing double as part of a big seven-run third inning.
In that third, Gwynedd loaded the bases on their first three batters before Tatoian ripped one down the line in left to plate all three for a 3-0 lead. Tatoian later scored on a passed ball, but the Griffins weren't done. After a Kean pitching change and runners on the corners, Shaughn Wright delivered a two-run double to left center. Wright came around to score on Jason Mulvey's infield single to up the lead to 7-0.
After Di Ianni had 1-2-3 innings in the first and second, the Cougars (4-1) were able to load the bases on a hit and two walks in the third. Di Ianni was able to put away a comebacker to the mound for the third out.
Tripodi came in for Di Ianni in the fourth and went into the seventh before Sullivan entered to get out of a bases-loaded spot in the frame. Carter worked the eighth before Tatoian closed out the ninth to give the Griffins their first shutout win over Kean in 11 meetings.
Keen tripled to lead off seventh and scored on a fielder's choice from Wright for this third RBI on the day.
The Griffins resume action on Tuesday when they traveled to nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins in a 3 p.m. start.
