Rowan Baseball Edges Stevens, 3-2 In Season Opener

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team opened the season in Glassboro for the first time since 1997 and came away with a 3-2 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday.

 

Center fielder Dan Shane (jr. Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) was three-for-four with three runs scored and four stolen bases. First baseman Anthony Harrold (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and third baseman Dillon Mendel (jr. Sparta, NJ/Sparta) each totaled two hits. Designated hitter Monny Strickland (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) drove in two runs.

 

Left-hander Drew Ryback (so. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) earned the win in relief. He tossed two frames without allowing a hit and struck out one. Righty Jeremy Dyzenhaus (so. Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) went the final two innings for the save. He did not surrender a hit and fanned three batters. Right-hander Charlie Ruegger (jr. Morris Plains, NJ/Whippany Park) took the loss (0-1).

 

The Ducks drop to 1-3 on the season. Designated hitter Tommy Baronner (sr. Solana Beach, CA/Torrey Pines) and third baseman Thomas Paulich (fr. Glen Cove, NY/Kellenberg Mem.) each recorded a double and one RBI. First baseman Alex Detweiler (sr. Sarasota, FL/Riverview) and shortstop Matthew Pasko (so. Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) crossed the plate one time apiece.

 

Rowan got on the board in the opening frame. Shane led off with an infield single then stole second. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Strickland's sacrifice fly. Each team pushed a run across in the third. Pasko singled to third with one out. He went to third on a base hit by catcher Matt Branco (jr. Egg Harbor City, NJ/Absegami) before coming home on an error.

 

Shane began the bottom half of the inning with a base knock to left. He swiped second then went to third on a fly out. Shane touched the plate on an error. Stevens tied the score again in the fourth. Detweiler had a lead-off walk. Left fielder Donny Gherardi's (jr. Oradell, NJ/Bergen Catholic) single put runners at first and second. Paulich doubled down the left field line to score Detweiler. The Ducks had a chance to take the lead with runners at second and third but right fielder Kyle Golla (sr. Palm Coast, FL/Allentown (NJ)) robbed Branco of a hit with a diving catch to end the frame.

 

The Profs posted the decisive run in the sixth. Shane walked with two outs and stole second for the fourth time. The throw by the catcher sailed into center field and Shane raced home to score on a two-base error.

 

Rowan travels to Randolph-Macon College for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3 at noon.
