William Paterson Baseball Finishes Spring Break Trip with 10-2 Victory Against Becker

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – The William Paterson baseball team (9-5) finished its Spring Break trip with a 10-2 victory against Becker (4-8) March 17 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

 

The Pioneers posted seven unearned runs during the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore designated hitter Vin Dorio was hit by a one-out pitch and sophomore second baseman Matt Ferrara singled through the left side before an error on a batted ball from senior catcher Jorge Solodkin plated Dorio. Freshman left fielder Evan Smith drew a base on balls, freshman center fielder Steven DiGirolamo had an RBI-fielder's choice, and freshman right fielder Dan Carter singled in Solodkin. A Greg Cuevas walk loaded the bases, and hit by pitches for freshman third baseman Christopher Liriano and freshman first baseman Carson Weis forced across two runs. Dorio and Ferrara were issued bases-loaded walks to make it a 7-0 score.

 

Back-to-back doubles by DiGirolamo and Carter added a run in the fifth.

 

A double, error, two singles and a sacrifice fly pushed across two Hawk runs during the top of the sixth inning.

 

WP added two more in the eighth when DiGirolamo walked, Carter singled, Cuevas hit an RBI-fielder's choice and Dorio doubled to right center.

 

Carter finished 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Dorio plated a pair of runs and DiGirolamo crossed the plate three times.

 

Senior Adam Miller struck out five over 5.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits (1-0). Sophomore Jack DeFouw allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over 1.0 inning, and freshman Jake Kavanagh walked one and struck out one in 1.0 inning of work. Classmate Christian Smith had two punchouts and one hit over 1.0 inning, and junior Ryan Tomao gave up a hit while striking out two during 1.0 inning on the mound.

 

Junior outfielder Daniel Diaz and sophomore shortstop Ben Mazzone each went 2-for-4 for Becker. Senior starter Nicholas Hawrylciw (0-2) was charged with seven unearned runs, three hits and four walks, striking out two in 1.2 innings.

 

William Paterson will go to Manhattanville Tuesday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m.
