Late Runs Push No. 18 Spalding Past Centre, 4-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 18 ranked Golden Eagles erased a two-run deficit in the fifth to top in-state foe Centre College, 4-3, Wednesday evening at Derby City Field to improve to 18-3 on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Eagles scored a run to cut the deficit to one run. SU loaded the bases on a pair of walks and an Eric Meyer single. Quenton Brownlee took four straight balls to advance Joe Hatcher home.
  • SU scored a pair of runs in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. Garrett Wilson singled to center to lead off the inning, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Hatcher doubled to the wall in left center scoring Wilson to tie the game 2-2. Meyer singled to right field bringing Hatcher in from second for the go-ahead run.
  • The Golden Eagles added a run in the eighth extending their lead to two runs. An error at first allowed Brownlee to reach to lead off the inning. Brownlee stole second and came home on a Wilson single to center field.

STAT LEADERS

  • Garrett Wilson continued his hot streak at the plate going 3-for-5 with one RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Infielders Eric Meyer and Joe Hatcher each tallied two hits and one RBI.
  • Freshman Carter Atkinson (2-0) earned the win in 3.1 innings of relief action. The right-hander limited Colonel hitters to one run, zero earned, on three hits, while striking out four batters and walking two.
  • Transfer Lane Staples earned his second save of the season striking out batter and forcing a pop out to short to end the game.

FOR THE FOES

  • Drew Schacht reached base on all five at bats going 4-for-4 and reach once on balls.
  • Aaron Scilly (2-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs, on three hits, while striking out two batters in 1.2 innings.

  • The Golden Eagles are back in action Thursday, April 5 resuming SLIAC play against Greenville.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm EST at Derby City Field.
