Covenant splits doubleheader at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Covenant baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split at Averett on Saturday in USA South action. The Scots dropped an 11-inning contest, 11-10, in the day's first game before responding with an 8-4 victory in the finale.

Covenant goes to 8-6 on the year and 3-2 in USA South play. Averett is now 3-14 overall and 2-7 in league action.

GAME TWO: Covenant 8, Averett 4

Covenant scored two runs in each of the first three innings and Jackson Heuer tossed seven innings as the Scots took the series finale, 8-4.

The Scots scored a pair of runs in the first, second, and third innings to take a 6-0 lead. Hunter Christian drew a bases loaded walk in the first and an Averett wild pitch led to Covenant's second run. Covenant took advantage of Averett miscues in the second inning to plate two more runs before tacking on two more in the third.

Heuer (3-0) threw seven innings and scattered nine hits with three earned runs, while striking out three to pick up the win. Ben Walsh and Jonah Carignan combined to throw the final two innings to seal the victory.

Brooks DuBose and Hunter Christian had RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively, to cap the scoring for the Scots.

Covenant had 11 hits in the victory led by Christian and Tommy Easley with two apiece. Christian also drove in two runs.

Averett starter Kyle Lamantia (0-2) lasted 2.1 innings and collected the loss. Nick Winston went 3-for-5 with three runs scored for the host Cougars.

GAME ONE: Averett 11, Covenant 10 (11 innings)

Covenant scored five runs in the top of the 10th inning, but Averett rallied for five runs in its half of the inning and scored the game-winning run in the 11th to grab an 11-10 victory over the Scots.

Covenant led 5-4 entering the ninth inning before Averett scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Covenant reliever Adam Carver was able to preserve the tie in the ninth as he wiggled out of a bases loaded jam with two outs.

In the 10th, the Scots seized a 10-5 lead with five runs on two hits. Covenant took advantage of three walks in the frame, including DuBose's RBI walk that gave Covenant a 6-5 lead. Brett Kernodle then delivered a three-run triple to make it 9-5, and later scored on a Tyler Moore RBI ground out.

However, Covenant could not hold the lead. Averett matched the Scots with five runs in the 10th on two hits as Tanner Bradshaw's sacrifice fly to right field tied the score at 10-10. In the bottom of the 11th, Nick Winston's one-out RBI single brought home the winning run.

Covenant took a 1-0 lead in the first after Moore singled home Kernodle. The Scots trailed 3-1 in the sixth inning before scoring four times. Christian had an infield, RBI single in the sixth, while Lewis Saunders, John Mitchell, and Carignan drew bases loaded walks.

DuBose was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI for Covenant. Kernodle went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Andrew Cline made the start and went eight innings allowing three earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Conor Austin (0-2) picked up the loss.

Tyler Butler (1-2) got the win in relief for the Cougars. Nate Tuck was 3-for-5 to lead Averett, which had 14 hits.
