WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team battled to earn a doubleheader split in a non-conference twinbill with Point Park University at Ross Memorial Park on Tuesday.

The Presidents suffered a 5-1 defeat in a 13-inning contest in game one before responding with a 4-1 win in game two against the Pioneers.

Game One Recap - Point Park 5, W&J 1 (13 innings)

The Presidents and Pioneers recorded a classic in the first game, as a scheduled seven innings turned into 13 by games end. Point Park came out on top in the first game, scoring four runs in the 13th to claim a 5-1 victory. The game was the longest for W&J since a 15-inning contest against Thomas More in a NCAA Regional elimination game on May 17, 2013.

The Pioneers scored their first run without tallying a hit. Two Presidents' errors, which included a failed pickoff attempt, allowed Point Park to go ahead 1-0 after the top of the third.

W&J knotted the score 1-1 in the fifth frame by hitting back-to-back triples. Dante Dalesandro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) got the rally going with a three-bagger down the right field line. Mullen Socha (Independence, Ohio/St. Ignatius) drove him home with a triple to deep center field.

That run by the Red & Black served as the last run until the 13th. Over the next eight innings, the two teams combined to throw seven relief pitchers. The Pioneers broke the scoreless streak in the 13th, with the aforementioned four runs.

Sophomore Nick Drake (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) go the start, going 6.0 innings and allowing the one run. Both Clay Martin (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Mitchell Taufer (Washington, Pa./Bishop Canevin) made scoreless relief appearances. Josh Palma (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) took the loss.

Game Two Recap - W&J 4, Point Park 1

W&J jumped on Point Park in game two, pushing a pair of runs across in the bottom of the first inning. Socha drew a one-out walk and raced home on a RBI triple by Spencer Howell (Oakwood, Ohio/Oakwood). Later in the inning, Howell would score on a balk call against the Point Park pitcher, extending the W&J advantage to 2-0.

The Presidents would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dalesandro started the rally with a leadoff triple, his second of the day. After a pitching change, Socha ripped a double to deep center to plate Dalesandro. After loading the bases, an RBI groundout by Adam Moore (Olean, N.Y./Archbishop Walsh) made the score 4-1.

That was more than enough support for starting pitcher Garrett Harstine (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadephia), who tossed 6.0 strong innings to pick up the victory. Harstine allowed just one run while scattering six hits. The senior right hander struck out eight and did not issue a walk.

Michael Zito (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg) worked a scoreless seventh to record his first collegiate save.

Freshman catcher Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./St. John's College) recorded two hits and reached base all three times in game two.

Overall for the day, Dalesandro totaled three hits, two runs scored and a pair of triples. Socha tallied three hits, two runs scored, two RBI, a triple and a double for the Presidents.

The split moves W&J to 4-7 overall, while Point Park sits at 11-9 in 2019. W&J hosts Muskingum University for a single nine-inning game on Wednesday, March 20. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
