Marietta splits OAC doubleheader at Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Marietta College split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Capital University Saturday (April 6) afternoon. The Crusaders took game one, 9-5, and the Pioneers won game two, 8-2. Marietta is 9-12 overall and 3-3 in the OAC. Capital is 6-16 on the season and 2-4 in the OAC.

Capital used two big innings to beat Marietta in game one. The Crusaders scored five runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Capital added four more runs on five hits in the seventh inning.

Dalton Wiggins (1-5) started and got the loss. He threw 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs on 10 hits. He walked one and struck out three. John Stover gave up two runs on four hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Pioneers grabbed the early lead with two runs in the second inning. Eddie Poster and Seamus Kenneally reached on singles and then came around to score on a base hit from Jared Weiss.

Marietta added single runs in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings. Kenneally doubled and scored on a sac fly from Weiss in the fourth. Weiss reached on an error and scored on a ground ball of the bat of Brady Cottom in the seventh and Mike Hale had an RBI single in the ninth.

Alex Mukensturm (3-2) started on the mound for Capital and got the win. He threw 6.0 innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. Mukensturm walked two and struck out seven. Tate Virts allowed two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings, while Dew Ellis notched his fourth save of the year by retiring the final two batters of the game.

Kenneally went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Weiss had two hits and drove in three runs. Damian Yenzi and Alex Page also had two hits for the Pioneers.

In the nite cap, freshman Gino Sabatine (3-1) pitched 6.1 shutout innings for the win. He scattered six hits, walked two and struck out four. Sam Mathews worked the final 2.2 innings and gave up two runs on four hits with one strikeout.

Once again, Marietta jumped on top early scoring two runs in the first inning. Yenzi and Hale each delivered RBI singles in the frame.

The Etta Express added four more runs in the sixth and then scored one in the eighth and one more in the ninth. In the sixth, Kenneally pulled a two-run double down the left field line, while Trent Castle knocked in a run with an infield single.

Freshman Alex Page launched a solo home run in the eighth. Hale accounted for MC's final run with an RBI single in the ninth.

Scott Gutstein (1-5) started and got the loss. He threw 8.0 innings and was charged with seven runs on nine hits. Gutstein walked two and struck out two. Bryant Caporale allowed one run on one hit in the ninth inning.

Hale finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Page had two hits, including the home run, and scored twice.

Marietta returns home to host the University of Mount Union on Tuesday (April 6). First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Don Schaly Stadium.
