The Bearcats won both ends of an important home conference doubleheader against the defending champions the College of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York.
In the first game, Paul Sirakowski was dominant on the mound with a complete game 2-0 shutout with four strikeouts.
Both teams only had two hits each in the pitching duel, but the Bearcats made them count the most. JP Ramirez smacked an RBI triple in the second inning to plate Conor McCabe for the first run.
Michael McGroarty had a sacrifice fly RBI in the third inning to bring home Davic Capellan to account for the second run that stood in the 2-0 final. Capellan had reached base on a single.
John Esposito (7IP, 6H, 2R, 2 ER, 4K, 3BB) suffered the complete game loss for the visitors.
In the second game, the Bearcats had to rally back twice from deficits to pull out a 6-5 win.
The Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Bearcats bats came alive with four runs in the bottom of the third. The Dolphins again took the lead at 5-4 in the top sixth, but the Bearcats scored two runs in the bottom sixth to take the lead for good at 6-5.
Theodore Avgerinos earned the win going six innings with three strikeouts, while Angel Acevedo had a 10 pitch seventh inning with a game-ending double play to record his second save.
Kemal Deljanin had the winning hit with an two-run single in the sixth inning to plate Liam O'Gara and Ramirez.
Andrew Nathan had a two-run homer for Staten Island in the sixth inning.
The Bearcats will resume action Tuesday with a non-conference single at Old Westbury on Long Island. They will complete the three game series with Staten Island on Thursday in a rescheduled date.
