Marietta rolls over Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio — Marietta College scored early and often as the Etta Express defeated Ohio Wesleyan University, 16-6, Wednesday (April 24) afternoon in a non-conference match up. The Pioneers improve to 15-17 overall, while Ohio Wesleyan slips to 12-20 on the season.

Marietta scored in all but two innings collecting 19 base hits in the game. Five different Pioneers had multiple hits with third baseman Damian Yenzi leading the way with four. Alex Page, Mike Hale and Isaac Danford each had three hits and Drew Wilkinson finished 2-for-5.

Hale went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run, four RBI and four runs scored. Danford had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs, while Wilkinson added a double and 3 RBI. Page doubled and scored three runs.

The Pioneers score one in the first and two in the second and third for an early 5-2 lead. The Battling Bishops got a three-run home run from Mitchell Johnson in the fourth inning to even the score, 5-5.

Marietta responded with two in the fifth and three more in the sixth. The Pioneers blew the game open with five runs in the top of the eighth.

Jared Strickler started on the mound for MC and worked 4.0 innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts. John Stover (5-2) picked up the win giving up one unearned run in 4.0 innings of work. He allowed four hits and struck out one. Danford pitched the ninth and struck out a pair of Bishops.

Seven different pitchers toed the rubber for Ohio Wesleyan. Justin Grubb started and went 4.0 innings. He gave up five runs on nine hits and struck out two. Matt Poole (1-2) was charged with two runs on one hit in 0.1 innings for the loss.

Marietta travels to University Heights on Saturday (April 27) for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at John Carroll University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
