Oglethorpe continues offensive struggles in 4-1 loss at Piedmont

The Oglethorpe baseball team fell 4-1 to the in-state Piedmont Lions in Demorest Wednesday night, dropping to 1-5 on the young season. The Stormy Petrels recorded only six hits in the contest, none of them for extra bases. Oglethorpe pitching held Piedmont to just six hits, also, but three of those were for extra bases.

The Lions went ahead 1-0 in the first inning, but the Petrels answered with a tally of their own in the second. Sophomore shortstop Billy Finch began the rally with a one-out single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore third baseman Andrew Noack followed with a run-scoring single, plating Finch and evening the score.

It would be the last time Oglethorpe would dent the scoreboard on the night, though, and Piedmont scored single runs in the second and third to take a 3-1 lead.

Sophomore right-hander Gabe Davenport got the start and allowed three runs on two hits over 2 2/3 innings, walking four and striking out three. He suffered the loss, but Oglethorpe relievers Garrett Parkins, Jackson Harrell, Kyle Blakeney and Heshie Getson combined for 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief work, keeping Oglethorpe in the game late. They were unable to get anything going with the bats, though, and Piedmont added an insurance run in the eighth inning.

Junior second baseman Alex Featherstone led the Petrels offensively with a 3-for-4 night.

The Petrels are set to get back to action over the weekend, when they'll host former SCAC rival DePauw Friday and Sunday from Anderson Field.
