No. 4 WashU Offensive Explodes in Sweep of ITT

St. Louis, Mo., March 1, 2020 – The No. 4-ranked Washington University in St. Louis baseball team exploded for 24 runs and 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep Sunday of Illinois Institute of Technology on Sunday at Kelly Field in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 6-0 with the victory, while IIT dropped to 0-3. The Bears won the three-game series outscoring IIT 37-4. 

No. 4 WashU 14, IIT 1 – Game One
WashU tied a season-high with 17 hits in the game-one victory.

Junior Collin Kahal was 3-for-3 with an RBI in the win, while senior John Brinkman (2-4, two runs, two RBI), sophomore Caleb Durbin (2-3, two runs, two RBI), junior Sean Robinson (2-2, two walks, two runs) and junior Johnny LaMantia (2-3, three RBI) also had multi-hit games.

WashU led 4-0 after two innings, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Durbin. Brinkman tripled to left in the fourth to push across two more runs to make it 7-0.

LaMantia singled up the middle to drive in two in the fifth to make it 11-0.

Junior Troy Bauer (2-0) picked up the win allowing three hits in five innings pitched with seven strikeouts. WashU's bullpen allowed two hits and one earned run in four innings.

No. 4 WashU 10, IIT 0 – Game Two
Robinson was 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs to lead the WashU offense that recorded 16 hits in the game-two win.

Brinkman (3-3), LaMantia (2-4, two RBI) and sophomore Tim Van Kirk (2-5, two RBI) all had multi-hit games for WashU.

A two-RBI single by Robinson made it 3-0 after two innings of play, and then a pair of two-RBI singles by LaMantia and Van Kirk in the fourth pushed the lead to 7-0.

Durbin added an RBI triple to left center in the fifth to make it 8-0.

Junior Tim Tague (2-0) picked up the win allowing one walk in four innings pitched with six strikeouts. Sophomore Matt Bauer made the start allowing one hit in three innings.
