Hood no hits Chargers in sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Three Hood College pitchers combined on a seven-inning no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Lancaster Bible in the first game of a doubleheader and the Blazers picked up the sweep with an 11-4 win in game two.

On the Mound

  • The no-hitter was the first in program history since Hood started baseball in 2015.
  • Jordan Patterson pitched the first five innings and struck out five for the win. Kevin Nelson, Jr. and David Dinges each threw hitless frames in relief to finish the job.
  • After the Chargers scored four in the first inning of game two, Jahlin Jean-Baptiste led four relievers who pitched six scoreless innings. He allowed two runs in three innings, striking out two to earn the victory. Scott Ash and Des Grimes did not allow a hit in the fifth or sixth, respectively before Brennan Lyons tossed a scoreless seventh.

At the Plate

  • Hood ran its home run streak to four straight games. Andrew Wenner hit his second of the year in the opener before Dylan Beck wenot deep in the second game.
  • Joe Kroeger had a four-hit effort in game two. Beck had two hits, two walks, three runs and three RBIs in the second game.
  • Trent Copenhaver had two hits in each contest.
  • The Blazers struck out just four times as a team in the doubleheader.

Hood 11, Lancaster Bible 0

  • Not only did Hood's pitching staff not allow a hit, but the Blazers did not issue a walk either. Patterson and Dinges did work around baserunners, however, as Hood's defense committed four total errors.
  • The offense scored four times in second inning on just two hits. Kroeger and Copenhaver led off the inning with singles and Andrew Wenner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A wild pitch brought in a run before James DeProspero and Andrew Perkins drew back-to-back walks to make it 2-0. Another wild pitch scored Wenner and Nick Rampone hit a sacrifice fly to drive in DeProspero for a 4-0 lead.
  • Copenhaver had an RBI single in the third and Perkins added a run-scoring double as the Blazers went ahead 7-0 after three innings.
  • Hood added two runs in the fourth without getting a hit. Shepherd and Brad Sawyer started the innings with walks and Beck was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Back-to-back RBI fielder's choices by Kroeger and Copenhaver allowed Hood to extend the lead to 9-0.
  • After an RBI single by Sawyer in the fifth, Wenner put the exclamation point on the victory with a solo home run to left.
  • Dinges struck out the final batter of the game to complete the no-hitter, one of two strikeouts in the inning for the sophomore.
  • The Blazers drew 10 bases on balls in the game, including two each by DeProspero and Sawyer. Copenhaver was the lone player with two hits. Kroeger, Wenner and DeProspero each scored twice. Shepherd stole two bases.
  • Landon Mowry pitched two-plus innings and took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks.

Hood 12, Lancaster Bible 4

  • The Chargers' bats came alive for four runs in the first but Hood erased the deficit with a nine-run third inning.
  • Kyle Ebersole had the big hit of the first for Lancaster Bible, a three-run home run to left field to drive in Beau Heagy and Ethan Varricchione.
  • Kroeger had a two-out RBI single in the first to make it 4-1 and a Charger error in the second allowed Copenhaver to score, making it a two-run game.
  • Hood came all the way back in the third. Six straight hitters reached base at one point in the inning, starting with a one-out single by Beck. Kroeger singled and Wenner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Three consecutive RBI singles by Copenhaver, Patterson and Mikhaili Robertson followed to make it 6-4 in favor of Hood. Two more runs scored on fielder's choices before Beck hit a three-run shot with two outs to make it 11-4.
  • Wenner drove in the final run for the second straight game, knocking in Beck with a fifth-inning single.
  • Jean-Baptiste improved to 3-0 with the win.
  • Beck reached base four times with a homer, a single and two walks. Robertson drove in two.
  • Danny Navarro had a pair of hits for LBC.
  • Adam Randolph took the loss, allowing eight runs in 2.1 innings.
