PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — The No. 15 ranked Etta Express won a pair of games Friday (March 13) in the Snowbird Classic giving head coach Brian Brewer his 600th career coaching victory. Marietta beat Bridgewater State University, 11-5, and then blanked Susquehanna University, 8-0.

Marietta improves to 9-1 on the season. Bridgewater falls to 1-7, while Susquehanna moves to 4-5 overall.

"We have the opportunity to play together for two more days and we need to make the most of the time we have left and we're going to enjoy the heck out of it," Brewer said. "Coming off an off day and with everything we've been through emotionally, I didn't expect us to be great in game one and we weren't. But we were good enough and then we played much better in game two."

Brewer, in his 17th season at the helm of the Etta Express and 21st year as a head coach, is now 600-319-1 in his career. An impressive .653 winning percentage. After four seasons as head coach at John Carroll University, Brewer has posted a record of 521-234-1 (.690 winning percentage) at Marietta.

"This milestone isn't about me. It's about the assistant coaches, the managers and players and the support that we get from the administration and the alumni," Brewer said. "It's certainly been a great ride and I've enjoyed it. Hopefully we've got another 600 in us."

Against Bridgewater in the first game, Marietta scored four runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 10-4 lead.

Sophomore Griffin Malick (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Nicklaus Brown. Brown worked four and one-third innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Malick entered with two runners on and one out in the top of the fifth inning. He got the first batter to fly out before surrendering an RBI single. Malick got out of the inning when the next hitter grounded out.

Sam Mathews took over on the mound in the top of the fifth and threw the last four innings. He allowed one unearned run on four hits for his third save of the season. Mathews walked one and struck out four.

The Pioneers jumped on top with two runs in the bottom of the first. Damian Yenzi led off with a walk and then scored when Seamus Kenneally followed with a double off the leftfield fence. Kenneally moved to third on a ground out off the bat of Alex Page and then scored on a sac fly from Tate Engle.

In MC's four-run fourth, Yenzi added an RBI double, while Kenneally and Engle each drove in runs with singles. Matthew Busby got things rolling in the fifth with an RBI double down the leftfield line. Page added a two-run double and Jared Weiss plated a run with a single to right. The Pioneers added an unearned run the eighth.

Lucas DiTondo (0-2) started and took the loss for Bridgewater State. He threw four and two-thirds innings and was charged with 10 runs, six earned, on 11 base hits. He walked four and struck out two. Guy Quartarone and Jake Graham each pitched in relief for the Bears.

Yenzi, Kenneally, Page, and Brady Cottom each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.

In game two, pitchers Justin Aviles, Dalton Wiggins and Isaac Danford combined to shutout out the River Hawks from Susquehanna. Aviles (1-0) worked six innings and allowed five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Wiggins tossed two innings of one-hit relief and struck out a pair, while Danford whiffed all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Kenneally went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles at the plate to lead the offensive attack. Marietta scored two in the first and one each in the second and third for the early 4-0 lead. The Pioneers added two runs in sixth and two more in the eighth.

Sean Rodriguez (0-1) started and took the loss for Susquehanna. He threw five and one-third innings and allowed six runs, five earned, on nine hits. Rodriguez walked one and struck out three. Ryan Monroy gave up two unearned runs on three hits in three and two-thirds innings. He walked one and struck out four.

Drew Holderbach and Weiss each added two hits in the game. Holderbach scored twice and had one RBI, while Weiss had a double and an RBI. Engle drove in two runs.

Marietta plays the College of Wooster Saturday (March 14) at 11 a.m. and then finishes the shortened season with a noon game against Susquehanna on Sunday (March 15).
